I honestly think CRL is becoming too busy for VFR traffic, even when there is no shortage of ATC staff.SR20 wrote: ↑07 Jan 2018, 12:43 EBCI restricted again this week-end

Hm, with all respect for your thoughts - and their honesty! - there are much busier airports that can and do perfectly handle VFR traffic. Even EBBR TWR handles a fair amount of helicopter* VFR traffic, both private and police. And whenever I hear an occurence there is no indication of stress or difficulty. Perhaps it is mainly a matter of getting used to a certain level of workload...
* and on top of that even the occasional SEP bimbler, on the 118.600 I regularly hear about "airwork over Kampenhout" or such...

It's a different thing to handle police helicopter etc... (ie professional pilots and good aircraft performance...) in a large CTR/TMA with multiple runways than handling flight schools and IFR/VFR training in a cramped airspace such as the one from EBCI.jan_olieslagers wrote: ↑07 Jan 2018, 15:06 Hm, with all respect for your thoughts - and their honesty! - there are much busier airports that can and do perfectly handle VFR traffic. Have you ever heard, touch and go's, VFR circuits, panels, procedural IFR approaches or even crossing EBBR CTR (I mean except police, militaries SAR etc...), I doubt so...

Can you elaborate a bit more about what you are suggesting by this?jan_olieslagers wrote: ↑07 Jan 2018, 15:06 Perhaps it is mainly a matter of getting used to a certain level of workload...
or you don't have the b**** to write what you exactly mean...

Re: 2018 Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news
I meant: if Brussels Tower can do it, then I dont't see why Charleroi Tower couldn't.
@Nevihta: Admittedly a SEP training touch and go's brings more work for a tower controller than a helicopter transiting. So does IFR training. Nothing stops EBCI from limiting the volume of training flights, they do that at EBAW too though I think it is for environmental reasons there, not because of the workload on tower staff.
And FYI: I quite often have Brussels Tower on my radio, and most helicopters I hear are NOT from police; SAR are even less frequent.
PS I do am aware Brussels Tower has two frequencies - as has Brussels Ground - but the second pair are only used at extremely busy moments; in fact I am under the impression they are less and less frequently in use.

Re: 2018 Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news
At BRU, tower North and South are almost always handled by two ATCOs, except when staffing or runway configuration deem it unsuitable to do so, or the traffic is immensely calm. (Often on Saturday afternoon, for example). BRU Ground is split whenever the workload requires it.
Brussels Tower doesn't shift even close to the amount of VFR traffic that CRL does. On top of that, most VFR traffic at BRU (save for the Police helos/fixed wing) don't even need to come close to the aerodrome. They just need to cross the CTR, either for work (ex. pipeline inspections) or pleasure.
Most VFR traffic at CRL is either coming from or going to the aerodrome, which makes it a lot more complicated to puzzle them in, since they need to be integrated in the stream of IFR TFC.
Air traffic at CRL and BRU are two VERY different beasts.

Again, thanks for clarification, @KriVa. It was clear to me those airports are quite different - EBCI perhaps coming closer to EBAW, in the nature of its traffic, but a good deal busier - but did not think the difference so big.
Still I hold that if tower staff at EBCI are overloaded, management has every option to limit the traffic volume.

I wonder how long it's gonna take before flight schools sue Belgocontrol

Maybe a polite way to suggest a move ?

Just my cents worth...
As a PPL trainee at EBCI, the service from EBCI tower/ground is always excellent and they are very accommodating and professional. From how I hear things the staffing issues at EBCI have been known about for some time, I think the issues are more complicated in CRL/Belgocontrol and I'm not sure removing GA from the airport is the fix.
Rgds,
Speedy

FR will close Trapani base from next winter, and the 4x Tps-Crl will be cancelled. For a period the 4x seemed to be moved to Palermo, but it will not.
Do you have an idea where those 4x will be moved? To Comiso, adding frequencies to the present 2x, to Catania, or ?

Sonaca 200 would be more something to put in a new topic called "2018 Namur-Suarlee Airport (QMN/EBNM) latest news" don't you think?Desert Rat wrote: ↑31 Jan 2018, 13:41 First sonaca 200 assembly starting soon + DOA approval...well done!
