BRU - Long haul & intercontinental in the medium-long term

Hi all,

I start a separate topic on (potential) future developments of the long haul and intercontinental market from BRU.

There were rumors in the past, or plans that never materialized. Which ones will see light and why?

Some that I remember or were discussed in other topics on this forum:

- Air Belgium to Hong Kong (A343) - probably not this year anymore
- Second daily flight EWR-BRU by UA (B757?)
- Oman airlines to Muscat (A320?)
- LATAM from (?)
- EVA air from taipei (via Bangkok) - but this was a rumor before Thai started Bangkok
- Asiana Airlines from Seoul (A350?)

Then of course you have SN where the most stubborn rumors were:

- Libreville and Lagos
- Boston and San Francisco

Which ones will see light (% chance?) and when, why/why not ... Missing some of the rumors or plans?

Previous rumors materialized, so it seems BRU is continuously working on new routes in a systematic way with good results: second daily Emirates, Shanghai, Beijing going daily, ...

Please, only indicate rumors, not wishes (because that list could become very long )

Concerning Hainan, I checked up their website and had a look to the offer on both PEK and SHA flights from/to BRU.

From next winter season.
Hainan will fly daily between BRU and both PEK and SHA.

BRU - PEK : HU 492 : From 12:20 To 05:20+1 : Days -2-4-67 (flight time : 10 hours).
BRU - SHA : HU 7922 : From 11:30 To 05:30+1 : Days 1-3-5-- (flight time : 11 hours).
PEK - BRU : HU 491 : From 01:45 To 05:45 : Days -2-4-67 (flight time : 11 hours).
SHA - BRU : HU 7921 : From 01:25 To 06:30 : Days 1-3-5-- (flight time : 12 hours 05 minutes).

In the framework of its cooperation with Thomas Cook, SN could launch some long-haul leisure destinations. When? Not before 2018. Where? Nothing decided yet, but one could think Phuket, Kilimanjaro, Cancun and the like. Once or twice a week...

I already started a similar posts some time ago regarding the potential future of BRU and its new LHL destinations so here's my take on it. These are only potential routes, not based on any rumours or anything but more which routes/airlines BRU should have in a couple of years:

USA:
- SFO/LAX: by SN
- BOS: by SN
- IAH: by UA

Africa:
- NBO: by SN
- JNB: by SN
- LOS: by SN

Asia:
- SIN: by SQ
- HKG: by CX
- ICN: by OZ
- DEL: by SN

South America:
- GIG: by JJ

You posted a nice map in one of the other topics, indicating the approximate range of SN's A330's. Clearly LAX or JNB are out of the question for now. I guess even SFO is a stretch.
SN did mention DEL though. If we see the additional frequency to BOM as a sign that route is performing well, who knows when DEL might come up.

Personally I find the whole PEK-PVG thing a bit disappointing. I was happy to hear HU announcing PVG, but they are still not up to daily on BRU-PEK. Compared to other airports in Europe it seems China is underserved from BRU. I guess one day SN should pick this up. I have also always found that HKG should be there as well, but I doubt CX would start it.

Oman Air from Muscat was mentioned quite some months ago. That seems to have gone silent.

During the morning there is a good, strong long haul wave.
During afternoon we have some African flights, China, Thailand and Middle East.
During the evening is a bit more now but this can be developed much better

What became a surprise to me is since the full take over of SN by LH, no single *Alliance carrier announced a new flight to BRU or increasing the number of flights.

At this moment it is very quiet about UA. No news anymore about their second EWR flight. Houston could be a very good add, bcs good connections now with Africa and The Middle East.

During the evening long haul wave some African flights could be added, a NY or EWR flight, Chinese destination (China Eastern had in the past late afternoon/evening flight ex-BRU)
What a flight to Vancouver by Air Canada or Air Transat?

The flights to/from South America will be, I suppose, also evening flights. In the past the flight to Brazil was always during the evening

Currently the HU flight to Beijing is daily. Daily from end of may to...september ? I do not know ! But now there are 7 flights a week !

GRU was operated by the City Bird MD11s on behalf of Sabena.
Older 332s will struggle to reach the Westcoast and on take off from JNB.
