Privacy versus Security Safeguards

Post by C-117 »

Should the E.U. abide by the increased U.S. demands that airlines destined for the States transmit extensive personal pax information - credit card numbers, meal preferences, etc in an effort to heighten security and combat terrorism - or should the individual countries give their own law enforcement agencies access to more limited (personal) pax data and not the U.S.?

I'm not sure how 'meal preferences' would give anybody any indication of who is on board an aircraft.

When I fly transatlantic, I order either a diabetic meal or a kosher meal. I'm not Jewish, but the food I get is invariably better than the 'Chicken Ding' served as standard.

Similarly, passing credit card details is likely to be ineffective. There is no requirement that the credit card holder should be the person named on the ticket.

It sounds like a well-intentioned but poorly thought-out idea. One of many.
