A Swiss Boeing 777 diverts to the Canadian Arctic after engine malfunction

Today's SWISS flight LX40 ZRH-LAX has diverted to Iqaluit in Canada due to an engine malfunction.

From SWISS: Update LX40: We confirm LX40 ZRH-LAX showed a technical irregularity, diverted to Iqaluit in Canada where it securely landed.

Actually, an irregularity indicator automatically shut one engine.

It looks like they've landed in the middle of nowhere, between the polar beers and the Eskimos.

Update LX40: Passengers diverted to YFB are now en route as LX7003 to JFK with A333 HB-JHK. Passengers will continue their journey to their original destination LAX asap.

But why not directly to LAX with the A333?

Maybe a bit a theoretical question but would the Swiss-pilots have diverted if the plane would have been the A340(with 3 engines remaining) and if yes ,would that have been to the same (i.e.nearest )airport awell? or would they have continued to let's say Montreal or even LAX?

I'm no pilot, but this is what I think would happen.

All depends on operational limitations of the airport in question and the condition off the plane. In theory they could continue their journey with a fuel penalty for the non operational engine. Except when there are other issues that caused the engine to fail in the first place and might affect other systems. Then the best alternate will be chosen. Be it the closest or the best equipped airport around.

An Antonov An-124 is getting ready to depart Zurich with a spare engine for the earlier diverted LX40 in Iqaluit.

The Antonov An-124 bringing a new engine for the SWISS 777 is on approach at Iqaluit. Currently -29℃ at YFB. Good luck to the teams that are going to replace the engine (A GE-90, by the way. Not sure it has been mentioned before)

There is no hangar to protect workers, so unless a tent is put up, all work on the aircraft will be done outside, in some of the coldest weather Iqaluit sees all year.
