BBC News : United Airlines is ending flights between New York and Newcastle over fears for the strength of the pound in the wake of the Brexit vote. United Airlines said its last service from Newcastle will fly on 6 September. The airline said the route was "not profitable" and anticipated an "impact of the weaker pound in UK outbound travel".

Wonder if it's just temporary, I think they did it before when their planes needed heavy maintenance (C-check, think once each 18 to 20 months with the A320 family?). Since BA has only 2 A318's and thus no backup they are forced to cancel one of the flights when the planes are going into heavy maintenance. Looking at the age of the birds it's quite possible they are in need of a D-check (or Airbus equivalent of the D-check).

But it can be a combination of both.

Three months ago, the airline proposed £25,000 passes for unlimited transatlantic travel during one year. Not sure that the holders of such passes (if any - I was told they didn't sell one single pass) will be very happy...
