Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
Brussels Airport Police threaten to strike. They want all passengers to amass in a tent first and have their luggage screened there. Seems to me that this plan would just move a bomber's target from the hall to the tent. Looks like they want a few more days off

The police wants entry checks before people go into the tent. And I wouldn't worry about them sitting at home. The have been busy non stop, securing the airport and being redeployed to the other airports to help out there.
I don't understand why people think they're out to ruin the reopening of the airport. Everybody wants a speedy reopening of Brussels Airport. But that doesn't mean we should make the same mistakes as before. And letting everybody walk in and out of the building unchecked is exactly what caused this tragedy. People might say that the problem is being moved to another location, but to put it bluntly: an explosion on the curb in front of the airport will probably make fewer victims and won't take out the airport for a whole week or more.

Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
All those people asking for more security inside buildings, do they think straight?
If one thing should be learned by all the bombings happening around the globe, it is that when someone really wants to harm others by means of a bomb they will fined a way too do so. In the end, all security agents, -gates and other measures are just window dressing to give the impression something is 'secure'. I'm not saying they are useless, but to me entering a 'fort knoxed' public area does not give me the impression we are living in a pleasant environment.

Yeah, let's continue like before. And then change our Facebook picture again in some time, while the dead are being counted and the airport is closed again for a week.
Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
I think we have to make a difference between the policemen (m/f) and the unions. You are talking about the policemen, and I agree with you: they don't want to ruin the reopening. The problem is the unions. They had already a few direct conflicts with the minister of Interior about the attacks (i.e. about the Belgian police officer in Turkey), so this re-opening development was another opportunity for them to hurt the minister. Stranded passengers is no worry for the unions: they call it "collateral damage".b-west wrote:The police wants entry checks before people go into the tent. What about daily and constant shop deliveries - newspapers, fresh food, beverages: it won't be possible to check all of them. And what about checking passengers entering the airport via the railway station?b-west wrote:And letting everybody walk in and out of the building unchecked is exactly what caused this tragedy. It wasn't the bomb blast that closed the airport for four days: it was the judicial investigation. The airport needed three days to be ready.b-west wrote:People might say that the problem is being moved to another location, but to put it bluntly: an explosion on the curb in front of the airport will probably make fewer victims and won't take out the airport for a whole week or more.

I'm not against an intelligent solution that would not create congestion at the entrance of the departure hall, but i can't think of any such system that could be improvised in a few days.
Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
Belgium shouldn't continue like before, but that doesn't mean airport security needs to change. Liason officers need to start doing there jobs, if someone is given 9 years they should spent 9 years in jail, if a parolee violates a condition of release it should have consequences, if information is known about the whereabouts of a fugitive terrorist it shouldn't remain lying on a desk etc. etc. This attack could have been prevented in many ways, different airport security isn't one of them.b-west wrote:Yeah, let's continue like before. Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
Same dirty union power play at Antwerp: the police unions want one bullet proof vest per policeman (apparently also for those who are not on duty), and they don't want that cars come as close to the runway as they can now. They have a meeting with the minister within a few weeks, and when the minister offers no solution: strike. "The offical strike notice has already been given before 22/03", they say.
Regional tv ATV:

Antwerp police unions (after the recent scandals, that have been overshadowed by terrorist attacks on BRU) should be dying in their shame right now instead of making demands... Shows how some people have no shame to start with.

The socialist trade union ABVV/FGTB has called a general strike for all federal public servants for Tuesday 26 April 2016.
Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2016
And what fantastic progress do they expect to achieve with that? Beside giving hell to the population in general.Passenger wrote:The socialist trade union ABVV/FGTB has called a general strike for all federal public servants for Tuesday 26 April 2016.
