Re: Contrail spotting January 2016
Hi there
Shocking weather at the moment up north so gave me some time to mod my new 8" dob, a couple of niggly things that were different to my 12".
1) the dobson az is not free like on the 12, Skywatcher opting for three small teflon blocks stapled to the mount instead of the two metal and one teflon base plate bearings causing very bad "stiction"! Quite frustrating. So had play about today i tried felt guard patches to help glide and replaced small centre circular teflon piece with 4cds to act as the base plates. Result: spins better but still rocks quite badly.
So i've ordered a 12" Lazy Susan bearing and some castors for the bottom.
2) the 8" only has straight finderscope so planes upside down.
So i took 1 large lense from my old 15x70 bins, got a length of plumbing tubing attached one end to the bin lense then locked bin lens into finderscope dovetail, then attached other end of pipe to and spare 1 1/4 inch star diagonial and 20mm eyepiece, got my focus length and secured it with trusty insulation tape.
