"...More than half of pilots working at Norwegian, Ryanair, and four other smaller European discount carriers have been hired under "atypical" arrangements, according to a study released Thursday by researchers at Ghent University in Belgium. The airlines cited in the report use labor practices that are markedly different than those of traditional airlines, as might be expected. But they also stand apart from rival discounters in Europe such as EasyJet and Germanwings, which hire most pilots under traditional contracts. The findings are based on a survey of more than 6,600 European airline pilots..."

I know you don't like this topic, but the University Ghent study really goes about cockpit crew

I know you don't like this topic, but go to the first post and read the title Bloomberg gave: "Budget Airlines Shop the World for Cheaper Pilots - Ryanair and Norwegian Air Shuttle are turning to the cockpit for ways to trim costs".

On 7th May 2015, the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs from the European Parliament has organized a public hearing “The current situation of employment and working conditions in the European civil aviation sector” (EU file EMPL/8/03138).

Reason for that public hearing was the well known study by the University Ghent (pdf 7 Mb) – see also the first posts in this topic:
Agenda:

Document:
http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meetdocs/ ... ion_en.pdf (pdf 7 Mb)

Speakers on that public hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels were:
- Mr Emmanuel Jahan, Association of European Airlines (AEA) and Chair of the Civil Aviation Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee
- Mrs Elisabetta Chicca, Chair of the ETF Cabin Crew Committee
- Mr Jon Horne, Vice-President of the European Cockpit Association (ETF)
- Mr Peter Turnbull, Professor of Human Resource Management Labour Relations, Cardiff Business School
- Mr Dirk Gillis, Academic Assistant at the Ghent University and Coordinator of International research institute on social fraud (IRIS) and Lien Valcke, Scientific Researcher at the Ghent University and Expert at IRIS.
Link to their cv and to their presentation: see items nrs 13 in this list:
http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meetdocs/ ... 7_0900.htm

So far so good. On 2nd July 2015 however, Dutch CDA Member of Parliament Wim van de Camp told the Dutch actua tv program “één vandaag” that five of the above speakers (including the AEA representative) have all been intimidated and threatened by Ryanair. The Dutch MEP is clear: the letter they received is a real “dreigbrief” – a threatening letter.

They all received a Strictly Private & Confidential Letter from Ryanair’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs that their statements at the hearing committee "were false, selective, unbalanced, misleading and defamatory claims”. The letter ends with “We are putting you in notice that should you make defamatory claims about Ryanair’s safety in any other forum we will initiate proceedings against you without further notice”.

The MEP told Dutch tv één vandaag that Ryanair, off course, has the right to disagree with what the experts said, and that Ryanair also has the right to say that these experts lie. But in no way, people appearing in a parliamentary hearing may be intimidated or threatened with legal prosecution for what they declare, the MEP stated.

“één vandaag” has put the letter that Ryanair has sent online:

While MEPs who speak at committee hearings are covered by parliamentary privilege, witnesses who give evidence to them are not.
Meaning the members of the European Parliament can say any thing without having to proof it, the other witnesses bear full responsability for their declarations.
IF IT AIN'T BOEING, I'M NOT GOING.

Not to mention looking at that list of speakers, the first 3 of them are chairmen of europe's biggest unions who's agenda is not really safety as we all know. In fact, one of the most unionised airlines in europe also has the worst safety record. Air france anyone?

FR hasnt had any fatal accident since the start of it's operation even though it operates the highest number of sectors in europe on a daily basis. Maybe the university of Ghent can take a look at that ;)
