Strikes affecting Belgian airports in 2014-2015

Learning from the experience of previous weeks at CRL and LGG, I think that

1) the airport will remain open and most flights will be operated (although SN already cancelled some flights preventively)
2) public transport to the airport will not operate at all
3) the unions might block the access roads to the airport

Therefore I'd suggest that you don't take your own car to the airport, but have someone drive you there (he can always drop you at a blockade 1 or 2 km from the airport).

I'd also suggest you travel light: baggage handlers might be on strike as well...

So far 40 flights (= approx 3000 passengers) have been cancelled at Brussels Airport due to the planned industrial actions on 8 December.

Due to the strikes in Brussels/Brabant on 8 December, Jetairfly will divert its flights to Charleroi, Liège, Ostend and, for long-haul flights, Amsterdam Schiphol (in the same way as, on 1 December, during the strike in Liège, it diverted its flights to Brussels, to where it bussed its passengers). All Finnair flights to/from Brussels on Monday, December 8 are cancelled.

Finnair offers customers the following flexibility for change of travel dates:

• Ticket is issued by December 5, 2014
• Ticket travel date is December 8 or 15, 2014
• New travel dates (orig. December 8) are from December 5 until 11, 2014, excluding December 8
• New travel dates (orig. December 15) are from December 12 until 18, 2014, excluding December 15
• Change of origin or destination is not allowed
• Refund if flight is cancelled

You may change the travel date by calling to Finnair +358 10 804060 or local Finnair Customer Service or to your Travel Agent. If the flight is cancelled, you may apply refund by filling a refund application in order to get a full refund of the ticket fare.

It might be an IT problem: when Pegasus came to CRL, the IT had to be reconfigured, because it had not be designed to handle connections (Pegasus was the first airline to offer connecting flights departing from CRL).

Monday, the railway stations at Brussels-Midi and North will be blocked by the strikers.
For the first time, also the buses that usually substitute the trains, notably to the airport ( Roissy? Zaventem ? Charleroi ?) will be blocked.

So far, 41% or 252 flights have been cancelled at Brussels Airport due to the planned strike this Monday 8 December.

United (3 flights), Delta, US Airways, Jet Airways (8 flights), Alitalia, easyJet (15 flights), Lufthansa (14 flights), Austrian, British Airways, Swiss, Finnair, KLM, Aer Lingus, CSA Czech Airlines, Air Serbia, Aegean Airlines, Turkish Airlines, El Al, Air Arabia, Etihad, Emirates, MEA, Tunisair, Aeroflot, among others, cancelled all their flights.

Iberia, TAP Air Portugal have cancelled some flights, but not all of them.

The Jetairfly flights are diverted to Liège, Charleroi and Ostend (medium-haul) and Amsterdam (long-haul). Two Thomas Cook flights are diverted to Lille.

LOT, Ryanair, SAS, Vueling (among others) have maintained all their flights.

Brussels Airlines has preventively cancelled only 16 flights out of more than 100:

It does look like that most, if not all, the flights that hadn't been cancelled beforehand do operate. I wonder if this would encourage airlines to not cancel their flights for next weeks strike.

Owing to a national strike in Belgium, Jet Airways, Air Baltic and Aegean Airlines have already announced the cancellation of their flights of 15 December to/from Brussels Airport.
