Provisional report from The Aviation Herald:
Crash: Malaysia B772 near Donetsk on Jul 17th 2014, disappeared from radar
A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration 9M-MRD performing flight MH-17 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 280 passengers and 15 crew, was enroute at FL330 about 50nm northwest of Donetsk (Ukraine) when the transponder signal was lost at FL330 at position N48.56 E37.21 at 13:43Z.
Interfax reports citing an industry source that a Malaysia Boeing 777 from Amsterdam to Malaysia has crashed near the Ukrainian/Russian border, the burning wreckage has been located. The aircraft has been shot down, the agency subsequently added.
Malaysia Airlines have confirmed an incident, the aircraft did not enter Russian Airspace so far, about two hours after the estimated entry into the airspace. At 15:40Z Malaysia Airlines tweeted: "Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow."
Ukraine's Ministry of Interior have confirmed the Boeing has crashed, there were no survivors.

Not one that can be used by poorly-trained amateurs...
Both the Russian and Ukrainian Land Forces use this radar-guided medium range missile system.

Sky over Eastern Ukraine was shut for civil aviation since July 8, but only for flights below 8,000m altitude.
German airline Lufthansa says it has decided to avoid Ukrainian airspace, with immediate effect.

Isn't it weird that the Ukrainians already know that something shot down the airplane and that something's exact specifications?
Perhaps they shot it down themselves by mistake on a test launch as the thing didn't respond to an abort command? That explains why they are so quick and eager to push the responsibilities to the Russian side?
I don't think that the rebels have such weapons systems on Ukrainian territory.
The best thing they have must be some shoulder-mounted systems, which will never go as high as 33.000 feet. I also don't think that the Russians would put such a weapon in the hands of non-military staff so close to their borders. That would be foolish.
Also, why are commercial flights flying over war zones where aircraft have been shot down recently?

Because the airspace was open.
The airspace above this region was closed below 7KM but higher than 7KM the airspace was open.

Many tweets tell that the airplane was escorted with 2 fighter jets, but not shot down by them.
Russian rebels deny, but they do have the Buk. https://twitter.com/magicbravosolo/stat ... 9907900417

In the update on the Aviation Herald, there are freightening sentences:
Ukrainian separatists had initially claimed they had shot down another Ukrainian Airforce AN-26, the comments were and references to them are currently being deleted across the Internet. Separatists of the self pronounced Republic of Donetsk had also shown off with ground to air missiles capable to down airliners in the last couple of days, these videos and messages are currently being deleted as well.
and
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister reported the Ukraine have opened a criminal investigation into the terrorist act and reported in a press conference, that they have intercepted phone calls between rebels who initially celebrated the shoot down of another Ukraine Air Force aircraft, then recognized and discussed that the aircraft was civilian with a lot of casualties.
If so, the rebels (or rather their Russian sponsors) have very bright computer specialists.

В районе Тореза только что сбили самолет Ан-26, валяется где-то за шахтой "Прогресс".sn26567 wrote: Ukrainian separatists had initially claimed they had shot down another Ukrainian Airforce AN-26, .
Предупреждали же - не летать в "нашем небе".
In the area Torrez just downed plane An-26, lying somewhere in the mine "Progress."
Also warned - do not fly in "our sky."

The rebels deny it. They say it was not their leader that tweeted, but someone on the ground who tweeted AFTER he saw that a plane had crashed - assuming it was an Ukrain military plane, assuming someone shot it down.andorra-airport wrote:В районе Тореза только что сбили самолет Ан-26, валяется где-то за шахтой "Прогресс".sn26567 wrote: Ukrainian separatists had initially claimed they had shot down another Ukrainian Airforce AN-26, .

How reliable is information from the Ukraian president, not elected through democratic elections?
How reliable is information from this president that orders his army to bomb his own people?
The best we can hope for aviation safety, is that the investigation is going to proof what caused the crash. Most likely indeed a missile. Launched by who? Military radar photo's (from Russia and Nato) will probably show that a missile was launched seconds before the crash, and the location will point out who did it. But will those who know these facts tell us?
