Exactly 10 years ago, Jetairfly was launched

Post by sn26567 »

Exactly 10 years ago, on Thursday 18 March 2004, people were preparing the official launch of Jetairfly (at that time it was called TUI Airlines Belgium) and its presentation to the press, travel agents and guests. A nice celebration.

A video was presented:

Are there any plans to integrate the various TUI fly airlines across Europe into 1 airliner?

Not into one single airline, but TUI is combining their companies in more functional groups. Like what we have already seen in Scandinavia. More recently, TUI Belgium and TUI Netherlands (so this is not only about the airline division) merged into one division of TUI being led by a Belgian-Dutch management (the Belgian ceo became ceo of the new Belgian-Dutch division). So now Jetair, Sunjets, VIPSelection, Arke, Holland International (does it still exist? I believe TUI Netherlands was going to phase out this brand), Jetairfly, Arke (airline, previously Arkefly), Tec4Jets, ... are now all part of one 'company' whitin TUI. But JAF and Arke will continue operating with seperate AOC's as far as I know, which is logical.

But you can't combine things too much. Part of the success is the strength of local brands. In the Netherlands everyone knows Arke, while Jetair is less known. In Belgium it is the other way around. And the same goes for every market TUI is active in. So until a certain level you can merge overhead activities, but TUI will always remain a huge multi-brand operation.

The first name of Jetairfly was TUI Airlines Belgium. For a brand recognition, it would have been better to keep the TUI name all over Europe, with or without integration.

Of course, 10 years ago, the TUI name was unknown in Belgium, whereas Jetair was a almost a household name, hence the name Jetair logo on the TUI Airlines Belgium planes.

Since TUI didn't get better known, Jetairfly soon replaced Jetair as logo. But the official name of the airlines is still TUI Airlines Belgium, operating as Jetairfly.

How many people (except the aviation buffs) know that the smile on the tail of the planes is the stylised TUI logo?

But even from the first moments flying as TUI Airlines Belgium, "Jetair" was branded on the aircraft because that's simply the brand that's very known in Belgium. That's the road TUI decided to take, brand the airlines in a way they represent the strongest local brand: Jetair, Arke, Thomson.
No reason to keep the TUI brand if that's not the strongest one. In some countries it is, in others basicly no one knows 'TUI'. A company like TUI doesn't need one branding for all operations, that doesn't work in Europe. TUI Travel has to integrate the different companies as much as possible to generate synergies, but they have to retain the multi-branding strategy to stay close to its customers.
