Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
This is no suprise to me...
The security checks for cars are a joke in BRU! I doubt they even check the nummerplate of your car? If it wears the airside sticker and you have a valid driver license you are ready to go!
With all respect, but if I were a gangster I wouldn't really care about the security agents at BRU... they are undertrained, underpayed, work under a lousy contract,... and are not motivated. Maybe that's the source of the security problem?
EDIT: And I'm not even talking about respons times of federal police and BAC security officers...

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
At 19:47 two Audi A8 vehicles with 8 heavily armed men on board broke a fence to penetrate into the airport. A safe containing 10 kilograms of diamonds was stolen from an armoured truck of Brinks. The Brinks conveyors were loading a Swiss aircraft when they were attacked. The robbers escaped through the same hole in the fence.
Air traffic has not been disturbed, except for the Swiss flight which was cancelled.

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
I have shared the concerns before, everybody laughed at me and my paranoia, and were asking to give examples, now apparently everyone sees it...
AirOpinion you are right about all that, but please remove/edit that post before some gangsters see where the security threats are (or at least don't give them idea's).
BRU knows very well about the security issues, their unwillingness to deal with them is their problem. In the meanwhile pax pay 30 euro's in airport taxes and BRU make money.
Gangsters happy, BRU happy, everybody happy.
What were you saying Tolipanebas? Kinshasa is dangerous? You must be kidding me.

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
@Flanker2: you are right... although for thousands of people working at the airport it is not really difficult to see ! So that one post doesn't really mather.
Let's not forget that in this case BRU is not only respossible for the security of passengers... but also for all the airport staff that work near such flights... my thoughts are with them!

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
2 audi A8's? atleast they did it in style
anyway no airport is impenetrable. at JFK or LAX you can also just cut the fence and drive airside

I too see many security risks at BRU.
However thinking anything at all is 100% secure is believing in Utopia.
There will always be someone that has enough imagination to see a way to breach any security.

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
It's sad isn't it?
The worst is all those drug busts, who knows how many innocent families are destroyed after guys are forced into smuggling drugs in and out of BRU, under threat of some drug lords who never get caught.
All that is because BRU tolerates too much. If there is no tolerance, there is no drug traffic.
In other countries, police patrols the tarmac, in BRU I've only seen airport inspection and all they carry is a stupid walkie-talkie. At CDG, you have police, GIGN and army patrols all the time.

It is true to that ultimate safety is not the goal... but you can make an effort!
I have a simple sollution for the fence drive-through! Make a one meter wide moat next to the fence, they did it in the middle ages...

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
If this information is correct it would be one of the most expensive heists of the century, maybe even the most expensive one in Belgium. 10kg's of diamand is about 50.000 carats with an average price of 7.500 EUR per carat (if the diamonds where good quality) gives this a value of 375 million EUR. It will be probably significant less but still...sn26567 wrote:A safe containing 10 kilograms of diamonds was stolen from an armoured truck of Brinks.
Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
Well laugh about it if you will, Antwerp is one of the biggest drug ports in the world, it's not like BRU isn't a convenient transit point for drug lords. BRU has always been a major transit point for drugs and illegal gems.yes BRU is to blame for all the drugs in the world!
http://www.mo.be/en/article/port-antwer ... ized-crime“Organized crime exists in Belgium, mainly in Antwerp and Brussels. Antwerp’s large port and Brussels’ main airport make them attractive targets for organized crime”, the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security writes in its Belgium 2011 Crime and Safety Report.
Read lower in that article: "Opportunity makes the thief"
If you work at the airport, don't brag too much about it to people you don't know...According to the UN, Belgium, together with the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, serves as the main access gate for cocaine to Europe.

Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
btw they should have had good information... how could they know that it was an helvetic plane operating for Swiss?
Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
https://www.facebook.com/BrusselsairportBRUWe can confirm that around 19.47h a few men managed to break through the fence at the airport with two cars. The men in the car rode to a Swiss airplane where they stole valuable goods. There was no shooting and no one got injured. This lasted only a few minutes and after that, they left the airport domain through the damaged fence.
The police has started a thorough investigation and the airport police is currently taking all the necessary actions. An on-site investigation is being carried out as part of the judicial inquiry.
The incident had no impact on the continuity of air traffic. The flight concerned has been cancelled.

Dutch press (De Telegraaf) mentions that the box contained gold and diamonds.Bralo20 wrote:If this information is correct it would be one of the most expensive heists of the century, maybe even the most expensive one in Belgium. 10kg's of diamand is about 50.000 carats with an average price of 7.500 EUR per carat (if the diamonds where good quality) gives this a value of 375 million EUR. Let's hope for the insurers it was more gold (in weigth) then diamonds...
Re: Armed robbery at Brussels Airport
Well, if you see the "fence" I'm not surprised you can drive through it with a car...
