Hi,

Top Gun is on ,again, tonight !

Maverick or Iceman..

What does it mean for you as this one is iconic!

For me a confirmation of the love for aviation I felt before,
the seed was a Buck Danny one!

Hi!

Aaaah Top Gun... as much as my love for aviation was due to my readings (Buck Danny, Biggles, Pierre Clostermann, and dozens of other books about the lives of Mermoz, Guillaumet, the Red Baron, and many other great names of aviation), I must say that Top Gun did not have a big effect on me (except some good laughs)... the reason is mainly because I saw it only after a week spent on Florennes AFB with fighter pilots who, during an afternoon where they were explaining their job with live training in the F-16 simulator, were constantly repeating: "unlike in Top Gun, real air combat in the 20th Century happens like this..."

So my point of view was biased when I first watched it (quite late, it was in 2001 I think).

But anyway, that is a good entertaining movie (like I like watching the "Iron Eagle" series, Flyboys, etc: for the show). And of course, it is also a pleasure to watch the best character in that movie: the F-14 :D

But if you want to know the movies that had an influence on my love for aviation, here are a few:
- "Battle of Britain" (hmm, all these Spitfire, Hurricane and Me-109!),
- "The Blue Max",
- "Memphis Belle" (not that historically accurate, a bit too Hollywoodian, but all these Flying Fortresses and this entry in the "bombing world" had a huge impact on me),
- "The Right Stuff"
