Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
Thank you André, I thought they started at the end of december, must have read it wrong
Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
I've looked it up for a moment, the A380 upper deck is 5.80m, the cabin width of the 787 is 5.49m. So indeed a difference of 12,2 inches.Streetstream wrote: If i'm not mistaken the A380's upper deck is 12.2 inches wider than the 787.
And I also did some research on their business class seats. BA currently also has a 2-4-2 business class on their 777's and 2-2-2 on their 767's. So 2-3-2 for the 787 will not be different based on seat width.
It's the way they place their seats which makes it possible to place so much seats almost next to eachother (they are not completely next to eachother). They have a regular width for business class seats.

You can close yourself of, or create a more open space when travelling together. Tough it looks messy like this, I assume it's still comfortable.

Qatar Airways forced to ground new Boeing 787
On Friday, CEO of Qatar Airways criticised US plane maker Boeing after being forced to ground a new 787 Dreamliner due to a faulty generator. Qatar Airways’ third 787 exhibited the failure on its delivery flight from the US. The plane may remain grounded for at least four days while Boeing sends spares and a recovery team.
The aircraft, just handed over by Boeing last week, has developed a problem similar to one that forced a United Continental aircraft to make an emergency landing.
Al Baker said: “Definitely we will demand compensation. We are not buying airplanes from them to put in a museum.”

Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
Boeing found 4 aircraft with this problem (the United one, this Qatar and two undelivered aircraft, one each for Qatar and United). They are investigating the problem and think the problem may not be within the generators, but whithin the power panels distributing power.
But Qatar's CEO is exaggerating again, he also said he wouldn't take delivery of any 787 without a proper solution for this problem. But some days later it came out that their deliveries for 19 december are still on shedule and Qatar didn't ask to delay this...

Yes, I know, Al Baker is well known for his big mouth, but at least he gets what he wants, and I'm sure he will get some compensation from Boeing, otherwise he will make a hell out of it.

Off-topic, but there is a nice video online about "Tram 15" : http://www.sonuma.be/archive/le-tram-15 ... atlantiqueHomo Aeroportus wrote: it reminded me of the SN "Tram 15" to JFK
Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
Year-end is near and deliveries speed up again. Today Boeing delivered 5 B787's. One each to Qatar, Air India, LOT, ANA and JAL. That makes 42 deliveries so far for 2012 (35-45 was planned by Boeing) with 4 more aircraft that should be delivered this year.
Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
Boeing itself tweets: "The 787 makes history today with 6 deliveries in less than 14 hours." The 6th one is United.
How do you reach such records? You delay some deliveries by a few days, and then on D-day you can deliver 5, 6, 10 planes at once. Not very serious...

You forget that it's not Boeing who decides the delivery date or has the right to delay it unless there are technical problems, they have contracts too...sn26567 wrote: How do you reach such records? On the other hand it's very normal that deliveries accumulate at the end of the year (before the holidays, when Boeing has two weeks of very minimal work), that's not only the case for the 787, but for all aircraft programs.
Boeing has had days who also saw 3-4 787 deliveries this year.
Besides, every year ends with a fierce orders and deliveries fight between Airbus and Boeing. With the difference that it has been years ago that Boeing won that fight, this year the gap is too big for Airbus to fill. So that's not the main reason for Boeing, the main reason is to get out as many aircraft as possible before the holidays. And that's not a last-minute idea, that has been planned months in advance, just like every year with other aircraft programs.
Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
I don't know if it's still up to date, but Boeing's supposed to deliver 70-80 B787's in 2013. And many of them will be new customers. Currently Hainan Airlines and China Southern both have aircraft that are close to ready for delivery (Hainan 2 and China Southern 3), but both face the Boeing/FAA against CAAC problems which is still delaying the Chinese certification of the 787. Both have several more in final assembly and about to enter final assembly.
Besides that, Thomson currently has 3 787's in final assembly (G-TUIA, G-TUIB and G-TUIC). Currently all aircraft until LN97 are under final assembly or being stored/delivered/pre-delivery preperation. LN98-LN100 see their parts arriving at Paine Field. The next new customer is LN102: Norwegian (ILFC-lease). Than you have LN108, the first one for British Airways. Next up is LN115, the first for Aeromexico (ILFC-lease). Than you have LN123, the first for Qantas/Jetstar. LN126 will not be an airline customer, but still a milestone in the 787-program, it will be ZB001, the first 787-9 aircraft. Than you have LN128, the first one for Royal Brunei Airlines
All these new customers will receive more 787's over the year, I only mentionned their first one. All current users of the 787 will also receive more 787's during next year. And of course there are going to be more new customers than now mentionned (JAF to name an important one
), but the production list after LN130 is not public yet.
Edit: Boeing and Lufthansa decided to cancell the planned delivery of one of their 748i aircraft. Boeing currently uses the aircraft for additional testing and planned to refurbish it for Q3 2013 delivery. But both for Boeing and Lufthansa that was not a great solution. Boeing would need another production 748F to test the GEnX PIP (Performance Improvement Package) and Lufthansa would get an aircraft that wouldn't be completely up to production standard anymore. Lufthansa decided together with Boeing to cancell the aircraft, resulting in a reduced order for LH of 'only' 19 aircraft. But Lufthansa also says they'll look at taking additional aircraft by Q3 2013 and "some of these may be 748's".

Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
With LOT's 787 first flight to BRU on jan 3rd coming close now is there something special foreseen, maybe a visit
, reception for the lucky ones or is it business as usual with the water salute?
Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
They delivered another one to Qatar on the 21st, so in total that makes 9 deliveries in December and 44 in 2012.sn26567 wrote:Boeing itself tweets: "The 787 makes history today with 6 deliveries in less than 14 hours." The 6th one is United.

Actually I thought it was Capt Jaspis who first referred to this Tram 15. But of course he was such a "presence" at SN that a lot of these quotes have his name tagged to.
Man, that was not yesterday.
I was a junior engineer back then when I had to ask him for his experienced comments and inputs on the PAPI then under development. The answer came out loud and clear "A real pilot doesn't need all this to make a good landing!".
I think the ol'man must be flying high above the clouds now, but what a personnality !.
Cheers.

Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
The year ended with 46 deliveries for the 787 and 31 748's were delivered. So with 77 deliveries for both together, that's right in the middle of their planned 70-85 deliveries.
I should check somewhere for the 748's that were delivered, but for the 787: As there were 3 deliveries in 2011, there are now 49 Dreamliners delivered to 8 airlines:
- ANA: 17
- JAL: 7
- United: 6 (5 was the planning until very recently)
- Air India: 5 (could have been more without AI's finance problems)
- Qatar Airways: 5 (some of them still in Victorville for IFE changes, but this is outside the contract with Boeing, so delivery happens before they transfer them to Victorville)
- Ethiopian Airlines: 4
- LAN Airlines: 3
- LOT: 2
Without the problems with the Chinese authorities, up to 5 787's for China Southern and Hainan Airlines could have been delivered by now. A part of them has already done flight testing, but were stored again.

Re: Boeing 787 and 748 news
A JAL 787 caught fire. This is beginning to look like a big problem. My opinion is that Boeing is pushing production too hard, too fast.
