Dutch public television is broadcasting a documentary about the fuel policy of Ryanair this evening, including 4 testimonials by ryanair captains who put into question the safety standards of their own airline:

Tonight at 21:15 on NED2.

disgruntled employees you can find anywhere, I can give you a few from EZY or JAF or FQ as well.
In the last 5 years there have been 4 occasions of a fuel emergency (including the 3 on the same day) If there would be an issue with the fuel policy, there would be a lot more occasions. Nough said

I stand by what I just said:

Just a short translation from the program content that KRO has put online:

… Ryanair pilots regularly fly with so little fuel that they feel uneasy… In order to save money, they are put under severe pressure to take as little fuel as possible... They see their collaboration to this television broadcast as a mayday call… The four pilots say that this pressure leads to safety risks… Is it influencing the safety? Yes it does… If the fuel policy doesn’t change, we’ll just have to wait for an aircraft without any fuel left…

Tonight’s 40 minute story on Ryanair is the first part of a series “The world behind your cheap tickets”.

The documentary will be available online (probably as from 22h tonight, when it has been broadcasted on TV). Same link probably as tolipanebas gave =

Last sunday evening, there were 3 emergency landings at BCN El Prat, due to a lack of fuel, caused by smog diversions. At least one crew called 'mayday, mayday'. As far as I know the aircraft were from Vueling, Easyjet and Air France.

For those who are scared of flying, there is always a good justification.
I couldn't care less : that fuel business is the pilot's job, not mine.
I am not scared of flying : I fly on Air France who has a crash every five years, and even Brussels Airlines with its old second-hand aircraft.
But, in the great desperate no-hold-barred "get rid of Ryanair" endeavour, it's an heaven-sent angle of attack - a few sissies might even be impressed ...

However, in the TV show representative of ECA (European Cockpit Association) will also mention that FR is not the only airline doing this.

BTW for those who are unfamiliar with the TV show Reporter, it has a tendency to present things worse in its press releases than what cabn be seen in their show. Moreover, though usually good investigative reporting, they sometimes seem to get carried away and miss their point

A diversion because you are approaching alternate fuel at the destination, in this case due to LVP, does not end up in an emergency landing at the alternate aerodrome. So I am sure the Jetair flight did not make an emergency landing. Please look up the meaning of emergency landing, before stating such things.

Sean1982, I can assure you that we take as much fuel as we want, without being called to the office...Unless you have the habit to take a tonneke extra every time, even in good weather. So whatever you have heard is cafepraat. If you have stories write them down, with the names of the people that told them, otherwise you can tell us fairy tales as much as you like.

Regards

A tonne is only half an hour extra, do you realise you just told us there is pressure as well at BruAir, as in almost all the airlines in the entire world, to take minimum legal fuel.

Exactly. And these "captains courageous" speaking on that TV program do it anonymously. Quite possibly telling us fairy tales, as you say.
What is most funny is that they said they wish to remain unseen in order to keep their job at Ryanair - perhaps not so bad a job, after all ?

I remember flying to BUD with SN earlier this year, where we couldn't land due to thick fog. We circled the airport for well over an hour before the fog finally cleared and we landed. So at least on that occasion I'm pretty convinced that at least SN doesn't require their pilots to fly with the bare minimum load of fuel. Haven't heard anything like that from the pilots I've spoken to either.

@fcw: Half an hour extra on the minimum required fuel in CAVOK is putting on pressure??? Please explain to everybody what minimum fuel required is before putting things in my mouth I did not say.

We take as much as we need, no pressure at all, the crew has to decide the amount of fuel they need extra, taking into account the situation at the destination.
