Larnaca-Brussels with Cyprus Airways

Post by sn26567 »

Coming back from a short holiday in Cyprus (Turkish North and Greek South) with a group. The outbound flight has been reported here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=48441.

The Greek Cypriot bus picked us up at 06:30 at the hotel in Kyrenia in the Turkish North, early enough to take care of the administration at the border on the Green Line (with UN soldiers watching) and the rush hour traffic jams in Nicosia.

Arrival at the airport at 08:10, two hours before departure, and plenty of time to queue with a huge crowd in front of the Cyprus Airways check-in desks.

Passport and hand baggage control went much faster. Plenty of shops in the air side, and plenty of seats to wait comfortably. Most noticeable: two free WiFi networks: Brussels Airport, please take note 'I still can't swallow the 10 euros that Telenet is asking for one hour of WiFi).

Our gate 48 was the most remote one, but the airport is small and the distance is not comparable with what you have to log if you want to go to the T gates at Brussels.

Boarding started 30 minutes before departure, this was well needed with a full plane of people having lots of hand luggage. Here is a view of the aircraft from the air bridge:

Flight: CY334
Date : 29/10/2012
Aircraft: Airbus A320-232 5B-DCJ "Amathus"
From-To: LCA-BRU (Larnaca-Brussels)
Seat: 23F (window right side, after wing)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Departure: 10:15/10:15 (GMT + 2)
Scheduled/Effective Time of Arrival: 13:50/13:35 (GMT + 1)
Scheduled/Effective Duration of the flight: 4 hrs 35 mins/4 hrs 20 mins

Friendly welcome by the 5 cabin crew (three ladies and two men). The economy class (nicely called "Aphrodite class") was full again, as during the outbound flight. But this time we had a higher density configuration with less leg room, although it was still at the limit of acceptability.

The business class (called "Apollo class" had 5 rows of a nice dedicated 2-2 seating separated from economy with a curtain). During the taxiing I took a picture of a Cyprus Airways A319:

Safety demonstration in Greek, English and French on the screens. The other announcements were in Greek and English.

Take-off to the East, followed by a 180° turn towards Nicosia in order to avoid flying over the Northern part of the country occupied by the Turkish Army. I could follow the route with a Google map until the coast of Turkey surrounded by Greek islands, but later we were over clouds until arrival at Brussels.

One hour after departure, a drink was served (free soft drinks - I chose apple juice -, alcoholic drinks at cost), followed by the dale of duty free goods. And two hours after departure we got a hot lunch (stewed beef with brown sauce and rice) and a dessert (pistachio custard), together with second drink.
Nice hot meal

The remainder of the flight went smoothly.

Landing in Brussels on 25L. But 50 metre before the gate the captain stopped the aircraft, took the microphone and said we had to wait for the optical guidance system to be switched on! First time this happened to me. After 5 minutes we could finally proceed to the gate in Terminal B, next to a JetairFly Boeing 737-700 (OO-JAO).

At passport control, new waiting: it was just when police was changing shifts. The incoming personnel had of course to chat with the outgoing police, in front of the waiting passengers. Thus our baggage was waiting for us when we arrived at the belt.

Altogether a second nice flight on Cyprus Airways, despite the reduced leg room, but with a hot meal, a timely departure and an early arrival.

One word about Cyprus Airways to conclude. The airlines has been trimmed after financial difficulties. They have abandoned long-haul flights and got rid of their A330s. They kept a dozen A320 family aircraft:
  • A319-132: 12C in dedicated 2-2 seating, 114Y
  • A320-231: 15-25C in 2-3 seating, 131-143Y
  • A320-232: 20C in dedicated 2-2 seating, 132Y
  • A321-231: 20C in dedicated 2-2 seating, 171Y
Their destinations are in Europe, the Middle East and the Gulf States. They have a codeshare agreement with Virgin Atlantic to fly between Cyprus and the US (JFK, EXE, BOS and LAX): CY flies the LHR-LCA leg and VS the transatlantic legs.

Nice report Andre. I don't like the look of that hot food though, looks like the liver we used to be served at school. I remember having something similar on Air New Zealand (SYD-AKL) and the meat was so overcooked it made a noise when you hit it with your fork.
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.

Who does the handling for Cyprus Airways? Unless the system didn't work as it should, bad points for them. That system should be ready by the time the aircraft lands (so even before it leaves the runway), at least that's how I'm used to it in AMS.

Anyway, nice trip report! ;)
But I believe Cyprus Airways will stop operating to BRU again at the end of this year? Are they planning to return in S13?

I didn't know they planned to stop; if they do stop dutring the winter season, it would be stupid not to start again in summer. I also heard in Cyprus that Thomas Cook and Jetair would stop flying to Paphos this winter. The local guides are unhappy, because in 2011 they were flying to Cyprus in winter, and I was among their passengers.

I also do not understand why SN stopped sharing codes with CY to LCA; seeing the load factors it should be a profitable route!

Tell me how to open a Telenet account in Wallonia, please. Furthermore, Telenet is the most expensive telecom operator in Belgium. No thanks, I am very happy with my quadruple play Scarlet account.

Happens all the time. Conservative estimate: at least 2 times per hour. We call parking control when it happens and they either reset the system or send a marshaller. The docking guidance on lots of stand is u/s and seeing that it took another 5 min, you probably had to wait for the marshaller...

Or no staff at all at the gate ! It happens sometimes.
