This classification is irrelevant as it's the TSA (or better Homeland security) who can prohibit nonstop flights if they view a country/airport not able to provide the necessary security. Hence why there are flights between Accra and the US but not between Nairobi and the US.tolipanebas wrote:Theoretically yes, but the US has something similar to the EU blacklist too you know?convair wrote:For the african traveler, wouldn't the next step be a non-stop flight NYC to, say, Kinshasa?
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) established the International Aviation Safety Assessments Program (in short: IASA) through public policy in August of 1992. Under this program, the FAA focuses on a country's ability to adhere to international standards and recommended practices for aircraft operations and maintenance established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Re: brussels airlines to New York!
You are right that the IASA program only prohibits carriers from several African countries to serve the US, it does not prohibit a reciprocal serving of those countries by US carriers.convair wrote:Thank you both for these explanations. But what about a US carrier flying NYC-FIH then? Delta flies to Dakar and (I just checked) a non-stop return NYC-Dakar-NYC is cheaper than with a stop at CDG!
However, as LJ has explained already, there's more to this game then just aviation safety.
Safe US carriers can not just serve any destination they feel fit for, they need an approval of their government before actually picking up international traffic rights and this approval includes a very thorough security assessment of the planned destination: you can find loads of information on this from the US government on the web too, but basically it means US carriers will not easily be allowed to serve Central African places due to specific security issues, even if the country is a caterory 1 country from an aviation safety perspective.

Re: brussels airlines to New York!
Affirmative. I'll be sitting in cattle, if my seatassignment holds up I'll be arround 32A (but hopefully 32C since I don't like the exit in my way) somewhere.brusselsairlinesfan wrote:Anyone else embarking on the 1st brussels airlines BRU-JFK flight here?!
Re: brussels airlines to New York!
If I hadn't had exams in June, I'd have jumped on the €400 fare when they announced the flights.
Re: brussels airlines to New York!
Hopefully we'll be getting a good report with 2 "embedded correspondants" on the inaugural flight!
Re: brussels airlines to New York!
FYI, first flight to JFK will be flown by OO-SFM for the moment.

BTW: SFM is the only one with the touchscreen's in C-class (SFW will get the same screens but for now pax have to use the remote in C) OO-SFV and others will have the correct screens aswel.
Re: brussels airlines to New York!
I've checked the availability of the flight this noon and nearly all bookingclasses had "9" as availability (exception to this is the "K" class which was the rock bottom fare of 400 EUR which has "2" as availability. SN's website however only gives "T" as the lowest fare for friday.
Anyway, it seemed that the first flight will be far from full...
However, it seems that it changed a bit compared to earlier:

To all people familiar with transatlantic flights, would you advice to seat on the right/left side of the plane during landing and take-off @ JFK? & BRU?

To JFK, sit on the right side to avoid having the sun in your eyes during the flight. You don't know the runways for take-off and landing in BRU and JFK in advance, so this shouldn't matter.brusselsairlinesfan wrote:To all people familiar with transatlantic flights, would you advice to seat on the right/left side of the plane during landing and take-off @ JFK? & BRU?

Check-in is opened. Unfortunately I couldn't change my seats, probably since I had prearranged seats already. I'm currently in 32A and my uncle is in 32F (exit row)... Going to try to change it later to 32C and 32D.

a mix of 8 B733/734
