Several airports make you walk long distances also sometimes through tunnels (the first which comes to my mind is FRA between Terminals A and B if my memory serves me right, and also at GVA) and at ZRH (for many, one of the best airports in the world) you also have to take escalators to go down to the train which takes you to Terminal E. Savvy frequent travelers know that at BRU, the best way to go down to the entrance of the "tunnel" is to take the lifts. I don't particularly like the tunnel, but is not worse than what many other airports offer.regi wrote:All in all, we have noticed that the bad impression of that long walk is mostly just an impression.

In favor of quality air travel.
Re: Infrastructure of Brussels Airport
What the connector will change is that it'll be a wide open space, probably you'll find shops and things like that overthere, it will be a space with a lot of light and you don't have the up/down thing you have with the tunnel. The overall walking time reduction is probably quite minimal indeed, but you said it yourself actually... Because it is such a boring walking it seems so long, when they make it a pleasant walking (and combine it with extra incoms, through shops) passengers will not feel like they have to walk to the other side of Brussels to catch their plane.regi wrote: The new connector will not change that much. All in all, we have noticed that the bad impression of that long walk is mostly just an impression. Was it not Jan or Stijn who made it in 10 minutes from airplane to the outside of the terminal building?
Re: Infrastructure of Brussels Airport
Talking about shopping, in many airports you can now buy duty-free on arrival which makes much more sense than carry these on-board. Haven't seen it yet in BRU though. Let's save fuel!

It's also possible in BRUconvair wrote:Talking about shopping, in many airports you can now buy duty-free on arrival which makes much more sense than carry these on-board. Haven't seen it yet in BRU though. Let's save fuel!

I did it already and I seem to remember banners across the A Pier inviting you to do so.

Pier A is devoted to Schengen pax and does not sell anything duty-free, i.e. without VAT (except perhaps in the T-zone).Homo Aeroportus wrote:I did it already and I seem to remember banners across the A Pier inviting you to do so.

As an additional post to my former one about the increased activities of DHL at Brussels Airport, I can add now a new investment.
Since a couple of weeks at Brucargo West they started with the construction of a new, hypermodern construction of 23.000m². Total area will be 27.000m²
DHL Global Forwarding will move all activities to this place.

What does this mean for the other existing DHL-buildings. E.g. the one near the bus station level...this building looks already very empty...Atlantis wrote:As an additional post to my former one about the increased activities of DHL at Brussels Airport, I can add now a new investment.

Re: BRU infrastructure: future
how can they need more space than before with half the tonnage ?
Re: BRU infrastructure: future
The investment will be made by DHL Global Forwarding and not DHL Express (the courrier company). DGF needs a bigger warehouse as their activities are now scattered over 3 buildings (the result of taking over other companies like Exel a few years ago).Acid-drop wrote:how can they need more space than before with half the tonnage ?

The building of DHL aviation at the terminal is not involved in this case.
The new building at Brucargo West is a landside building and the purpose is to centralise everything what we can find of them at Brucargo in general. If you see now how growed they have to work and how dangerous it is (trucks, cars, busses after the second roundabout), it was more then urgent that they could use a new building. Those elder building will be or demolished or revamped.
When DHL aviation should be involved than they had to start with one of the two airside building with tarmac connection who are also in the pipeline.

Brussels Airport infrastructure
Hi there,
I was wondering if/why Brussels Airport is (not) planning to upgrade the old part of the airport (towards the south, along RNY 2, leading to RNY 07R ). I understand a new overground pier is/will be built in the new side of the airport, but what about the older part?
Cheers,

There are plans for a complete renovation of the old terminal building:

Re: Brussels Airport infrastructure
Thanks. There doesn't seem to be much info on the website. Will these still be offices? What about the terminals in that region? When will it be built?
Cheers
Cheers

Re: Brussels Airport infrastructure
Not the brightest move of The Brussels Airport Company, IMHO. Why does a company like Deloitte need a buiding at the airport? It would be more intelligent to keep airport infrastructure for companies that really need the airport: shipping companies, forwarders, warehouses, etc.

Re: Brussels Airport infrastructure
The gateway building isn't really suitable for the kind of companies you name. These companies want offices besides warehouses, and that's what Brucargo is doing (the new landside buildings at Brucargo West).sn26567 wrote:Not the brightest move of The Brussels Airport Company, IMHO. This was purely intented to attract new companies to the airport that only need offices. Mind that the whole Airport City strategy of Schiphol (and some other airports) once started with the exact same goal. All these numerous office buildings around AMS are all owned by the Schiphol Group and rented to companies of which A LOT of them have nothing to do with aviation, but just want to be close to the airport because of all the air- and landside connections (to answer your question, why such a company would want an office at an airport). That's on the main things that made the Schiphol Group VERY profitable (their profits out of aeronautical revenues are very limited).
