Sukhoi SuperJet Disappears During Indonesia Demo Flight
A Sukhoi SuperJet 100, the first new Russian passenger plane in more than two decades, disappeared during a demonstration flight in Indonesia with about 40 people onboard.
The plane vanished from radar in West Java at around 2:33 p.m., after declining to 6,000 feet. About 100 people were deployed to search the area after bad weather forced helicopters to turn back.
The SuperJet, certified to fly by Russian authorities in February 2011, is the spearhead in an attempt to revive the nation’s aerospace following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. The aircraft, which seats 70 to 90 people, is still waiting approval from European authorities. The SuperJet is seeking to compete with planes made by Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA (EMBR3) and Bombardier Inc.
United Aircraft Corp., the parent of Sukhoi, confirmed the plane went missing about 20 minutes after take-off. The jet was undertaking its second demonstrator flight for the day, after a smooth first round, and had been fully checked.
Customers for the plane included Armenia’s Armavia and Russia’s flagship company OAO Aeroflot. PT Sky Aviation, an Indonesian carrier, has ordered 12.

Besides of probably human loss, this is a very unwelcome blow in the aviation industry.
Free market competition is necessary and the manufacturing potential in aviation of the CIS states is largely unused.
Still fingers crossed, but the time has passed by already for a flight.

Not sure,if the investigation reveals to be a human error (to low altitude and mountain crash),such flight Air France flight 296,it may turn out to a very competitive aircraft.regi wrote: this is a very unwelcome blow in the aviation industry.

Believed to have been found now.
Has crashed into the mountains.
Really really sad news and bad for the Asian sales campaign.

Having been in a similar situation ( airshow crash 1997 ), I do also feel sympathy for the relief workers who have to find and collect human remains. This picture can only prepare the rescue workers to be confronted with the most horrific sights.

And a PRELIMINARY official report: http://news.aviation-safety.net/2012/08 ... -altitude/
Can't help wondering about the English Language Profiency of the crews, both in the plane and at the tower. Certainly I see no mention of a CLEARANCE to descend to 6000.
