Are there any statistics on the LF of these exotic routes and on their profitability? Have routes been closed in recent years, surely the route planners cannot be right every single time and hit a pot of gold for the bean counters.

BrightCedars, I can answer your question with one statement: THY has also lodged their financial figures. They are in red. 1 Billion Turkish Liras loss.

I flew TK from BRU to IST last Wednesday (back yesterday, Friday). Their inflight magazine also mentions this new destination. There is a, believe it or not, 2 page article on the touristic assets of Mogadishu (ancient islamic architecture, a large fruit & vegetables open air market ("the largest in Somalia"), etc ... Just a small hint referring to the problems we all know of ("trying to rebuild its future") ... Anyway, I wasn't convinced to pay a ticket and go check it out for myself ;) ...
By the way (and off topic) , TK is good, really good. I flew them long haul (approx. 10 years ago) to Singapore, and then from BRU to IST twice (4 years ago and this week). I don't know of any other European airline offering you the choice between 2 meals on short haul flights (and my Tavuk Sis / Chicken Skewer was really tasty) Thumbs up

I'm surprised that TK is doing this bad in the earnings.

It made me check out their balance sheet and what's there is pretty unimpressive.
If they don't turn around the company quickly, they're going to run into difficulties by 2014.

The Africa routes and the new German routes will be a good investment, but they need to rationalize their fleet.
Their fleet is such a mess, I think that the better fit for them would be a B737/A330 (Asia)/B777 (America's) combo, they don't really need the A320/A340.

They also operate a lot of excess routes and frequencies, they better start looking where they're not making any money.

I think one can not ignore the fact that besides basic economics, there's also quite some politics involved - showing the world that emerging Turkey is booming and is becoming an economic powerhouse.

Strike

Post by hakan »

A snap strike called by the union resulted cancellations of up to 130 flights today. Some press reports telling that who joined this strike getting SMS messages from THY that their employment has been terminated due to joining the illegal strike (!). They even sending people to check the sick personnel at their homes to make sure they are not pretending illness and being part of the strike?????

The Minister of Transport told the media that the government could intervene if the illegal strike continues. The negotiations between union and THY have failed even after arbitration attempt by the industrial court.

I don't see the problem with checking if an employee is pretending illness...
