Afriqiyah Airways - when back to Brussels?

Good afternoon,

Anyone have an idea when Afriqiyah Airways will resume its direct flights to Brussels?

On their website there's this message: "This site is down for maintenance. Please check back again soon" and you can login with a password (which of course I don't have)....

I know 4 of their planes have been damaged and that there has been a merger of Afriqiyah Airways and Lybian Airlines into the Libyan African Aviation Holding Company, but I can't find any info on their filght schedule...

Any chance of seeing them back in Brussels in May? I probably will have to go to Tripoli that month....

Don't count on it soon. Interim Transport Minister Yousefel-Uheshi told Reuters the carriers could be merged by the first quarter of 2013 http://af.reuters.com/article/investing ... =0&sp=true

It is still unsure whether Afriqiyah will keep its sub-Saharan network (CEO Rammah Ettir stated most routes were unprofitable, except for Lagos and Accra).

Afriqiyah and Libiyan do fly at the moment, but only to a few cities, like Istanbul ,Tunis and Cairo.

Libyan Airlines plans a big expansion in Europe this year, after they restarted the most important capitals in Europe they'll go after Asia again. Afriqiyah's route will probably be different than these of Libyan (as it was to a certain level in the past) as they still prepare for a merger.

Sounds like the best of times for SN to jump in and add a high yielding not that far away African spot on the map with one of it's A319's or A320's while mitigating the risk to see a local competitor reopen the BRU route with some African connections on the other side like used to be.

KLM will re-start Tripoli on 1 May. A good example for SN!

There are virtually no economic ties between Belgium and Libya. The lucrative oil business isn't big in Belgium (and if I'm not mistaken the business in Libya is dominated by French and Italian companies) Why would SN send their A320s/A319s to TIP? The market is high yield for those who have ties to the country. Otherwise I think one can use its resources much better to other destinations.

Which is not certain at the moment (further postponements may occur)... If KL is not sure if it can fill a 737-700 three weekly, I doubt SN can fill a A319.

Afriqiah may not yet be back to Brussels (due to the European ban), but, according to CH-Aviation:

Afriqiyah Airways has now also wet-leased an A320-200 from Nouvelair allowing it to continue operations to the European Union.

According to airlineroute.net Afriqiyah is resuming twice weekly fligths to Rome on 19th April - two days time. This presumably is to test the water to its nearest EU neighbour.

If this is the case then the blanket voluntary ban imposed by Libya at the end of March on flying to the EU must have been lifted - or maybe its a challenge to the EU.

If it is successful then maybe we will start to see Afriqiyah back at more European airports quite soon.

Well it seems that the situation is changing quickly. Everyone is heading to Libya. An interesting market for many companies (not only oil business) as Libya has no production at all (except oil) and needs to import everything. Flights to/from Libya are having a great demand which is 'much' bigger than the offer today. Most planes are fully booked and horrible expensive. Next Tuesday I am returning from Tripoli to Brussels. I booked LH, only business class bookable 900€ one way. A full journey from Brussels should cost you 1250€ economy. Pretty expensive for medium haul flights into my opinion. This is not a temporary situation but already going on a while.

Even stronger is the demand for cargo. Express delivery takes now about 8days if you are lucky instead of 3. Otherwise the delivery of your shipment will be even further postponed. Prices are here as well pretty expensive. For a small carton of about 50kgs you'll pay about 550€. Quite lucrative, isn't it?

If you see this, you maybe even should reconsider the possibility of SN flying TIP, although *A is already quite good present with TK and Austrian.
