Which carrier to KTM (Kathmandu)?

Post by Wohowbagger »

Last year I tried to go to Thailand, but something(s) came in the way, and so at the last moment I had to cancel my trip there  . Hopefully I'll be going later this year, more probably next year.

This year I'm going with my gf to Nepal for volunteer work and of course some travelling. About 4 weeks, somewhere between the end of June and the beginning of August. 8-)
Any idea's on the best price/quality product? And when do I book?

Quick search learns me RT is now around 800,- à 1.000,- good options with EY (2x A332; 1 long stop in AUH).
Maybe flying to BOM or DEL and then JetLite or Kingfisher to KTM?

Where are you located? PIA are offering Karachi-KTM roundtrip for US$404 inclusive of taxes, they fly thrice weekly A310.

fares to SIN with SQ are 'round 900,-(can't get the search machine on their website working). with MI SIN-KTM is already 660eur (on a date I checked). 1500,- seems a little expensive, no? or did I make a mistake :? ?

I'd suggest you second option: fly to DEL (lots of flights and competition) and take a LCC there. Spicejet has just started to fly to KTM or will be shortly. I flew them 3 years ago (DEL-Srinagar and Srinagar-Jammu) and they are not bad at all: easy internet booking, check-in no problem, flight OK (new 737-800's, luggage free of charge, water on board). They have special startup fares to KTM now, so book early. Kingfisher and Jet are offcourse good but not cheap anymore.
This can result in a return BRU-KTM for 600-700 euro. I just don't know which terminal they are in DEL for KTM.
Just hope for good weather that time: monsoon and mountains can be a bad combination, but not necessarely (I was always lucky).
Enjoy your trip!

They don't fly in summer, and besides, do you want to spend more then 11 hours in a 737?

Qatar is cheap, about 654,- end of June. Long stop in Doha.

few additional questions:

DEL or BOM?
-DEL seems to be a shorter route
-DEL has fully renewed terminal
-DEL offers LCC to KTM

Has LH got IFE in their A346 and/or B744?

LH offers BRU-MUC/FRA-DEL for about 500,- RT. (9W BRU-DEL RT for 850,-)
LCC(SpiceJet (SG) /IndiGo (6E) ) is about 80 à 100 eur RT DEL-KTM. So + LH fe = 600,-
International carriers use T3. 6E uses T3, SG T1D (is it a big walk?) (I'll probably need to go out and pick-up my luggage, then go back and check-in with the LCC, no?)

Qatar is also an option, but it always is, same as EY.

The easy more expensive choice (BRU-...-KTM) could be LH and AI (900,-), or 9W (1000,-)

The terminals in DEL are all renewed now, they're as good as a "normal" terminal in europe now, easy to use.
BUT: since you're in India be sure you have enough time to connect, changing terminals or not.
One thing I haven't tought about: checking out and back in for a LCC, another terminal or not, probably requires a visum for India (50 euro single entry 1 month, coming back same way: multiple entry, don't know the price).
