Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
In French :

The German airline Lufthansa said Thursday it was suspending for six months all investments, except those for its fleet and those deemed essential for its activity, in response to economic difficulties for the airline industry.
A spokesman for the group asked by AFP, however, was not able to provide a concrete example of the investments concerned, or to say how much money the group was to save. The decision was made earlier this week, with immediate effect.

Thx, your article gives more details.
No miracles to expect out of Germany I guess.
I just hope the situation will stabilise at SN! Challenging times ahead.

Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
To Moderator : let's rename this thread to :"economic downturn : how it affects carriers ?"
I'll start with my little 2 cts concerning SN :
Not the best time IMHO to start flying to JFK. Better for the moment to continue developing AFI instead ...
And rely for the NA feeding on the usual *A partners.
LH sold BMI at a good time. They are committed in SN so I don't expect them to drop them but times ahead are tough, SN must prepare to rely mostly on themselves.
Until recently it seems the crisis didn't impact TP, IB and EI too much. With a bemol for EI ?

IMHO LH is saving money to buy TAP. LATAM will probably join OW and LH and *A want to expand in South America and Africa.
Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
And LATAM is not the only one in Oneworld that wants TAP, also IAG sees TAP as a possibility to take over. And indeed, LH really wants to keep them in Star and preferable in the LH Group. Without doubt TAP will be the next to join the LH Group.ticketbuyer wrote:IMHO LH is saving money to buy TAP. LATAM will probably join OW and LH and *A want to expand in South America and Africa.

My vote is IAG to buy TAP
Europe in the future:
LH group
Air France/KLM group
IAG group
Ryanair
Easyjet

Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
That is indeed going to be future of the European Airlines, but LH will do everything to keep them. Just as SN, they are more important than they seem, at least for a certain market. LH was rumoured to take over SAS and LOT and TAP, but they will go for TAP before LOT and SAS, because they know the risk to loose TAP is much higher.
Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
there's a good chance but the portugese gov. is not a fan of selling TAP to IAGandorra-airport wrote:My vote is IAG to buy TAP
if LH doesn't make a move IAG will win for sure

Re: Lufthansa stops all investments due economic downturn
TAP has a very appealing Brazilian network, and they probably end up in the LH Group. I think their future there will be brighter there than in IAG (and so does the Portugese Gvt).
It's pretty obvious there will be 3 big groups of airlines (LH, IAG, AF-KL) in Europe in the future, plus some LCC, with Ryanair and EasyJet being the biggest ones.
EasyJet already has a history of taking over other airlines (GB Airways, Go Fly and that Basel company), we will see Ryanair doing the same in the next years.
