1. Paris, Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, agree

2. Los Angeles international airport, only been once

3. London Heathrow, depends on terminal (terminal 1 agree, terminal 5, don't agree)

4. Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa (Honduras), never been

5. Nioy Aquino airport in Manila (Philippines), never been

6. Jom Kenyatta airport in Nairobi (Kenya), never been

7. JFK airport New York, depends on terminal (DLterminal agree, AA terminal, don't agree)

8. Tribhuvan international airport Kathmandu (Nepal), never been

9. Perth airport (Australia), never been

10. São Paulo-Guarulhos International (Brazil), after the restauration, it's a bit better, but still, better arrange lounge access if possible.

I would like to add to the wall of shame:

Chennai Airport for... well... everything
Treviso Airport for it''s cramped boarding area
Roma Ciampino for it''s cramped boarding area and lack of descent food outlets

Cheers,

Stij

I have been to TGU in the late 80's and early 90's. It was certainly not "world-class", specially for incoming pax, but also definitvely not horrid. 3rd world (ish) yes, but not nightmarish.

The same for other airports in the country : San Pedro Sula (at the time the best airport in the country, built with Spanish money) and RTB (very, very laid back, very relaxed).

I heard that TGU has greatly improved since then, with a new terminal. I have seen the photos on airliners.net and it looked like many airports around ... so I seriously doubt that TGU, a fairly small and unimportant airport, really deserves being the 4th most hated airport in the world.

Could
  • Dhaka,
    New Delhi and
    Mumbai
not be listed?

It is possible that Dhaka received few bad points because half of the passengers vanish in the system.
Seriously: Mumbai, come on guys. Read for example about the rather good Indian airline Jet Airways on Skytrax. Everything is spoiled by weird transfer procedures at Mumbai.

And has nobody undergone the strange mentality of police at the entrance of Ho Chi Minh airport?
"Show ticket"
You show a A4 printed online booking
"show ticket"
-euh-
think , think harder, and fork out at the side of your bag a used luggage tag of the incoming flight, still preserved somewhere.
"Here is ticket"
"Okay, you go"

At another occasion at Saigon, I had to show a passport before entering the airport building. I was helping friends to make a reconfirmation and all offices were unreachable by phone. I stayed close at the airport and decided to solve it at the Vietnam Airlines desk. The guard asked my passport and I showed him the passport of a female Belgian friend who is a head smaller, blond heared and obviously female looking while I , well, look as a normal male.
"Okay , you go"

Fawlty Tower, Vietnamese style I would say.

Sad that LHR still scores so bad after the major investment in Terminal 5. Mentality has improved. But it can still be a nightmare for not so experienced travellers to transfer by bus from the one terminal to the other.

CDG: they deserve it.

Almost forgot it: no remarks about luggage retrival at Kinshasha?

Well, it also has to do with the volumes of passengers who experience the airports at hand.

I definitely agree that CDG is one of the worst large modern first world country airports I've had to go thru and that I willingly avoid it when travelling in family.

Otherwise I remember using HRE airport, that is waiting in the plane until the rain stops and walking to that hangar of a terminal with 10 cm of water on the tarmac. But you'd expect something like this as part of the experience, unlike at CDG.

Fine if you travel BA only. But if you have to transfer from one terminal to another one, LHR is a nightmare. One bright spot in an ocean of darkness cannot justify a better rating.

All big airports can be a nightmare if you have to connect to a different airlines, but I respectfully disagree about CDG. As much as Terminal 1 hasn't aged well, and connection's from T1 to T2 2 can be a serious hassle, connections within terminal 2 are easy, the environment is pleasant and with a TGV station right inside the terminal connections to the french province or Brussels are very practical. Bit of a generalization here.
My least favorite are JFK and Brussels. When I lived in Miami, Delta or City Bird arrived almost at the very tip of this endless corridor named terminal A. Connecting to T.B, which I did regularly, took me half an hour of walking. Mind you, I haven't flown out of BRU for years for other reasons I don't to discuss, and things might have changed since.

Obviously got this spot because of the Hairy Landing procedure not because of the terminal facilities. Same story with the Nepalese Airport - the airport is quite reasonable given it's location, it's just that the location is very extreme.

Interesting that ORD is not listed. I'm sure it was recently rated the worst airport in the US. The inclusion of PER is quite amazing, the layout is not the most convenient but it is being rebuilt. And there is nothing particularly annoying that happens there, transfers are a bit of a pain and it can get quite crowded during AM flights but hardly anything unexpected during redevelopment.
