JAF CORFU 'go-around'

Hi,

Last monday my auntie and uncle had flown the flight from JAF from Brussels to Corfu..

At Corfu they had 'the luck ' to enjoy 2 'doorstart- damn don't remember the english word,help '.
My aunt was quite impressed by this and was happy still to be alive.
No reason was given by crew.. ( as far as they told my mum ).

If somebody know the reason of this , please let us know..

I know this happens frequent ( altough I never had the luck myself ),
all reasons are possible-runaway obstruction,windshear,.. but it would be nice to tell them
what it was as they know I'm into these things haha

Maybe with a simple reason my uncle can overrule my aunt with reasonable things to fly a next time,
as for as I heard it will be hard to get her at home !

Go around ? That's without a try no ? I thought 'touch and go' but don't know for sure ..

A ' touch and go ' is only used for training flights when the purpose is to fly again after landing. It has nothing to do with a go-around .
Go-around is a safety procedure by an aborted landing when the purpose is to make a landing with a full stop.

@ CX-B , I remember the term "balked landing". Maybe that was what you were looking for? "Overshoot" is sometimes used, but most people will use that word, when you run off the end of the runway.

Thanks for the replies so far..
overshoot-indeed mostly by landing troubles-,touch and go - by exercises-,balked landing -mm,never used that myself-, go around ' probably but thought this was used only without a landing attempt , but don't know for sure.. hey pilots ?? JAF737-tolepanebas-??

A go-around is instructed by ATC
A pilot declares a missed approach.

Don't forget that Corfu / Kerkyra airport has a "challenging" approach.

You will have a runway constructed on a landfilled area over water ,and mountains around it. On short finals you have a hill just east of the runway. In combination with the wrong wind (strong north) makes approaches quite dangerous since from the open sea you end up approaching a runway near steep rising land formations that are not always favourable to the wind direction. This could explain the go arounds.

happened to me at Funchal as well.. that is also a "challenging" landing strip and you see missed approaches regularly there.

I flew to Corfu about a month ago on a Thomas Cook A320 and it indeed seemed like a challenging approach (from the passenger side at least). While on final, I had the impression we had a crosswind because the pilot seemed to have crabbed the plane to align it with the centreline. My sister was not really at ease with this manoeuvre, but I told her it is a perfectly normal one.
