SN A330 blocked in Kinshasa by sand in engine

Post by sn26567 »

News item retrieved from French Television website TF1. Strange that Belgian media do not report it:

An Airbus Brussels Airlines 330-300 could not take off from Kinshasa airport Wednesday night (27 July) after one of its engines sucked sand used for works near the runway. Just before initiating its take-off at the end of the runway, while turning around, the engine was damaged by sand used for works. The plane with 278 passengers and 12 crew should have taken off drom Ndjili international airport to Brussels.

Almost right, the right engine hit a pile of sand and rocks who was (mis)placed on the side of the runway and thereafter the engine sucked the sand and rocks in.

Result: heavy smoke/dust production in the cabin, several fan blades bended, low pressure turbine congested with sand and air intake heavily damaged.

A replacement plane is send over to fly the pax and crew back this night.

For those who are interested, it was OO-SFV who was damaged.

Indeed, it was also SFV who's cockpit windows were broken by a hail thunderstorm before the landing in NSI.

Airline and airport blame each otherfor the incident, Brussels Airlines stating that the work was not reported and the light failed, and that "as it is not the fault of the company was going to have someone pay ", as reported by RTL. Denied by N'Djili version, which does not exclude a "negligence and poor assessment of the pilot."

This sounds as a very costly affair! And quite complicated. I assume that the entire engine will be replaced? Or are technicians capable to repair it at Kinshasha?
Probably several weeks out?

Maybe they can ferry the plane to their state-of-the-art maintenance facility in FBM?

Seriously though, glad it didn't end up like that SQ flight in TPE. Bummer to have 20% of the fleet out.

Technicians were flown in yesterday evening to start reparing the engine. Spare parts will arrive this evening.

Very costly indeed...

OO-SFV will stay off-duty for the whole week, due to the sand in the aircosystem.
Privilige Style B757 (EC-ISY)will be flying for SN (Dakar), and is now on finals (ETA 20H41).
ETD tomorrow (SN201) is 15H30.

thank you for the insight information.
So the repair job will be done on site! And it will probably involve trials at the airport and an empty return flight?

OO-SFV off "Côte d'Azur" inbound to BRU. Repaired two days earlier than scheduled...

Will the DRC pay for this unacceptable incident ???
