Een nog niet geïdentificeerde gewapende groep heeft vandaag bij het ochtendkrieken geprobeerd de controle te verwerven over de luchthaven van Lubumbashi, de hoofdplaats van de zuidoostelijke Congolese mijnprovincie Katanga. Er zijn schoten gehoord, zo heeft de regeringswoordvoerder aan het Franse persbureau AFP gezegd.

LUBUMBASHI, Democratic Republic of Congo, Feb 04, 2011 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) -- Gunfire erupted Friday as unidentified attackers fought troops guarding the airport at Lubumbashi in DR Congo's southeastern mining region of Katanga, a government spokesman said.

"We heard about this and we are trying to identify the group who indeed did attack soldiers who were guarding the airport at around 4:00 a.m. (0200 GMT)," said government spokesman Lambert Mende.

He added that sporadic gunfire was still heard two hours later but said police and soldiers were containing the attack.

An airport source said it appeared the attackers belonged to a "group of secessionists," without giving further details.

The airport is located about 12 kilometers from downtown Lubumbashi, the main city in Katanga, the country's principal mining region which holds 30% of the world's cobalt and 10% of its copper reserves as well as gold, uranium and pewter.

Belgian paratroopers intervened more in this place than anywhere else.
It is just about the money under the soil.
