Registration database for this website

Post by luchtzak »

Hi all,

I was thinking today to make a registration database on this website, one that users can help making it bigger and bigger themselves. But I will need some help with the input. I will make an example how I would present it:

Aircraft Registration | Aircraft Type | Construction number | Delivery date | Engine type | Current owner | Former Aircraft Registration

Do I need to have some more fields or is it ok like this ? Comments are welcome!

greetings,

Bart

I think it's a great idea

We could maybe add the number of seats on the airplane.

A field "Other remarks" can be a solution to avoid creating a lot of fields that will be empty the whole time, in that you can write interesting things about that aircraft...

In addition to the owner it would be useful to have the operator as well. Many aircraft are not flown by the people who own them - leasing companies, banks etc.

Will you want to do this by type, country or operator?

I do hope that you like data entry!!!!!!

Looks to me that basically you would like to have the info as presented in the JP Airline fleets.

They have the whole book on CD Rom, but it will cost. Don't know how much. If you want to save money, you can start typing (it is no more than +750 pages in very small font)

In the manual they have a website reference

www.buchairnet.com and and e-mail : jp@buchair.ch

good luck

Great idea, but... I warn you: it's a full time job!

Look at Bill Harms his database: only with boeing-airbus-mc donnel dougles, he needed a whole month every time to update it (and it was a monthly update, so he was working on it all years through).

Aircrafts go from airline to airline, you need to update everything. And a lot of updates must be made on a monthly basis.

Great Idea!

I've got on my site several information on the planes that were in use by Sabena and of those of SNBA. I can mail them in SQL? :)

@Sabena 690, it caused Bill a lot of more work since his pages were in HTML/TXT, which means that he needs to update those page, updating a database can be much faster! Certainly if you allow visitors to manage it (eventually with authorisation of a few good members).

It will be a lot of work. But is there no software that can read txt files, I have heard something about it at school. Otherwise I will help whit the input of the data after my exams. I have here also a magazine whit the latest updates of aircraft registations.

It is also nice to put a picture in the database, a hotlink to the Luchtzak pictures. Otherwise it will be too much complicated. And maybe start whit the Belgian aircrafts putting in the database.

Well, there is such a software, but the "txt" files should be of a specified format, f.e. the columns must be separtated by tabs or a special character. Once that is satisfied you can import it to Excel, which can export it to CSV and CSV is readable by mySQL :)

I do not know a lot of internet languish. But how far will Luchtzak go if it is just the European registrations it looks possible to do that whit a couple of persons, but is it the whole word, than it would be a lot of work.

Bart,

The idea looks great, but will need a lot of work, as many persons have already mentioned.

On the other hand, I am sure you do not want to re-invent the wheel. Hence my suggestion: why not co-operate with the authors of an existing database like http://pascal.brugier.free.fr/registre/txt/? (By the way, this is a txt database :!: )

If all the aviation enthusiasts around the world could unite, the load of work would be spread over tens, if not hundreds of people, making it easier for each of them. :)

I also think it'll be a lot of work, but if we all contribute a bit, we'll be able to make a great database

That's true, therefore we might just start with the Belgian ones? And then see how it develops...

Ok,

thanks for all the information, first I will start to develop the module. Then we can work to get all the Belgian registers (cargo, business-jet, etc...), we will also look if we can transfer text-files into SQL-database. To make the module will take me a week or 2 (I hope). I will start right now!

Hi all,

just to inform that there is a very nice aircraft-registrations website: http://www.sicuroengineering.com/Broker ... tabase.htm

Anyway I'm looking to make one myself with the help of those databases.

Tom,

The meaning from the database of Luchtzak is making an international database and just starting whit the Belgian registrations. I have looked at your database, it is really nice, but the meaning of the Luchtzak database is not based on pictures where your is based on. That is my opinion about it.

Dave,

I wasn't complaining about anything (that's why I used a  )... just making the remark that we also have a d-base with belgian reg'ns.

Offcourse ours is still picture-based, but all the functions of bringing the information is ready to go without pictures in the near future.
