BIMAN delay at BRU

Post by regi »

Good day,
yesterday the news showed passengers of a Biman flight stuck already 2 days at BRU.
Is it a UK bound flight that diverted to BRU? ( and that cannot fly further because of bad conditions in the UK ?)
As I am not around, is it the leased B777?
Great fun for the ground crew again.
Valium time for airport staff... :)

This is sooo true!

A couple of years ago, I worked for Skyshops for a month during the summer holidays. That particular day I had to start around noon and when I relieved my colleague she wished me good luck for the afternoon as there was an outbound BIMAN flight sheduled.
I particularly remember one guy who insisted on paying in dollars. When I told him the price, he thought I was ripping him of as it costed more in dollars than in euro's (or he was trying to rip me off). I explained him that the difference between the euro and dollar price were due to the exchange rate, but he did not want to listen.
He said something I couldn't undertand to his wife, told me he would be back in a minute, went to the currency exchange office or whatever you call a "wisselkantoor", exchanged his dollars for euro's while paying a redicoulisly high fee and returned as proud as hell to my cash register to pay the "lower" euro price!

Priceless!

And the passengers? They have to sleep now for 2 nights in the airplane ? ;) (Why would this not surprise me...)

Yes, but at least the transit zone is a little less dull than sitting in a seat of a grounded aircraft looking through a small window

At least the Biman plane does not need to be de-iced, the hydraulic leaks will get rid of any ice.

I know Regi, I was just joking. Sleeping in front (C-class) in this former Singapore Airlines 777-212ER would be not thát bad. Only problem is .... the toilet.......... ;)

Thanks for info, as Biman was written in capitals in the title I thought it was something like a special flight, not a company. Wasn't aware that Biman was the name of a company.

OK Nevitha, but still a small correction about economics: the sole purpose of a company is to make profit. Disregarding the legal status of Biman - which is a company indeed - it is not profitable at all, due to all kind of things, let's say it as positive as possible: external interference.
If you ever had a bad flight or would be angry at one or other company, read the passenger reviews on skytrax. You will have some laughs, but you will also have wide open eyes  .
Anyway, I flew them several times - in business class.
Other members know my 2 addictions: Biman and Alitalia.
The difference is that I can say about Biman that I am happy that I had that experience. I deeply regret my flights with AZ.
If you read the other replies it all refers to some strange events of the days that Biman used Brussels as a fuel stop on its way to the USA with utterly run down DC-10 aircraft.
It took many airport and ground staff months of psychological care to recover from Biman experiences.
But at last Biman was gone and we had some better long haul carriers such as Hainan, Jet Airways and Etihad. Untill this week that Biman reappeared on the tarmac of BRU. The news mentioned that many ground handlers could not reach the airport because of the weather. Which is BS because there is an excellent train connection. I suppose that several hundred of workers called in sick when they were instantly allerted by colleagues that a Biman plane had landed at BRU and had no intention to leave for the next days. :)

Ah Biman, the good old memories! When I went spotting @ BRU when I was younger, I used to see the DC-10's taking off from 25R. Believe me, this was a very thrilling experience. You never knew if the aircraft would actually make it. On many occasions the old DC-10 used every single meter of the runway before leaving the ground. I remember one occasion where me, my father and some other spectators started running from the fence as we thought it wouldn't make it that day. If you want to learn more about Biman, you should watch the Flemish version of "Life as it is - Airport". It has a funny episode about Biman's DC-10 and it's poor maintenance.
