CO/UA merger: a done deal.

Post by Conti764 »

Sources on A.net indicate that the merger agreement between CO and UA is near completion and the official statement will be done by monday.

http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB1 ... DkyWj.html

The company HQ will be in Chicago (i.s.o. Houston) and the United brand will survive. CO's Jeff Smisek will be the new company's CEO.

A shame to see the Continental brand disappear. But on the other hand: maybe a 747 at BRU for EWR ops? ;)

If it happens, i would like to see the Continental culture survive under the United name. The folks at the helm of United have not done a really good job. The nickel and dimeing of passengers and horrible service is not one i wish to see prevail. Continental has been a good corporate citizen in Houston and has a good product. The merger between the 2 has great potential for greatness, but only if the Continental culture survives. Thats my 2 cents ;)

How does this rumour fit with the announcement by Continental last week that talks were ended?

Also would like to add.......

I wonder how the Obama Administration will look at this potential combination? He is not so keen on combinations that will hurt unions, workers rights and mergers that will harm competition. I think they would have had an easier time merging during the Bush Administration. Time for the lawyers to get ready to go to work :)

It was rumoured CO and UA would end their talks since they seemingly couldn't come to an agreement about stock exchange rates. The last few days negotiations were back on track and it seems an agreement is close...

My last hope to keep Continental alive actually. I hope the Obama administration will halt the merger.

I would like to see Continental survive as well. As i said before, Continental has a good product. I spend many flight hours aboard Continental jets ;) If the 2 do merge, i really hope the Continental culture and method of doing business prevails. A successful merger would occur if the Continental management is placed at the helm. Besides, theres plenty of room to add the corporate staff of Untied Airlines to the Continental Tower in downtown Houston ;)

Not a chance this will happen, the merger will go through. Both airlines have few overlap, DOJ can't probably halt the merger (I'm pretty sure UA/CO have allready figured this out).

UA will be the acquiring airline, HQ will be located in Chicago, Smisek from CO will be CEO, Tilton from UA will be the chairman of the board untill he goes on retirement. UA will be the surviving brand. Management will be a mix with the best of both airlines.

The merger is actually a done deal, it probably was allready for some time...

I really hope that UA will hold his E+ section in every plane and that they keep the A319/320's arround... CO may be an all Boeing airline and while I'm a huge Boeing fan and have some issues with Airbus aircrafts I do like the A320 series better then the 737. With the widebodies Boeing is still my favourite though I hope that UA will hold his order of A350's arround... I'm rather sure that UA will introduce E+ throughout the whole (new) fleet but you'll never know with Smisek as CEO...

I've flewn both UA & CO and I like UA better then CO, but like always with favourite airlines, it's a personal choice... In the EU I even fly British Airways before I even think about flying with SN

Anyway, monday we'll see the announcement ;-)

Actually,

Both airlines are allready owned for the larger part by the same shareholders, 62 and 69% of both airlines are owned by 7 major shareholders.

You are probably correct, but stranger things have happened. I still remember the 'done deal' talk back in 2000 when United was to acquire US Airways and that deal didnt pass the government sniff test, even with all the proposed divestures. Monday will be an interesting news day ;)

Maybe the unions will fight the merger and with an Obama administration they'll have more bargaining power then with the previous administration.

Keep dreaming Conti764, Continental will become United and it really is not a bad thing.

The logo is ok for me, only the way United is written looks weird :)

And a quick look at their 'new' route map... what a network!

BTW, according to the merger website there are only flights to IAD and EWR out of BRU, no ORD. I know some people here like to discuss errors on websites
