Maastricht-Aachen Airport (MAA) Down Under?

Post by Propwash »

Some years ago the 'Dutch' Province of Limburg sold the infrastructure of Maastricht-Aachen Airport (MAA) for 5 mio € or so to a private U.K./Dutch investment group (Omniport and Dura Vermeer).

Due to huge 'operational' losses, 'operational' airport deteroriation and airport closure protection, the Provincial 'Keeping Up Appearances' Government is 'thinking of' buying parts (infrastructure) back.

Port or starboard turn and many thanks to the Dutch, LGG (Liège Airport) will have a great future ;)

As of 2008, the airport had a passenger throughput of 252,000 and handled 87,000 tons of cargo.
this isn't bad at all ... Ok it's not a major airport and they could probably attract more pax but it's decent
In July 2004, a 100% share in the airport was acquired by OmDV
LGG was already 5 times bigger than MST at that time. I'm not sure MST helped LGG to grow in any way ...
The instrument landing system (ILS) for runway 21 was upgraded to category III in 2008
track : 2,500m
These are also good reason why cargo never really significantly increased.
AMS are not far. Middle sized LGG, BRU and CGN are even closer. It's not easy to grow next to that kind of competition.

quoted part are from wikipedia

Sure they did.

We have to go back in history.
The 'Dutch' Province of Limburg kicked out the 'little green' nightly Cargo haulers first, which diverted to LGG

Reason: the locals didn't wanted the nightly Cargo operations :shh:

The locals (Maastricht and surroundings) can hear the N+4  from LGG without having the financial benefits

I think, MAA missed the 'freight' train many many years ago ;)

And completely correct.
MAA lost the connection to a bigger Cargo airport, about 15 years ago, when Dutch government decided not to grant the "Oost-West Baan" to MAA.
At that time LGG was considerably smaller and only having a few hangars
From that time of LGG was growing considerably and is now the airport, which MAA was supossed to be.

Yeah,

It will be a matter of time (decade or so) before the real estate guys, starting to build 'nice' houses at MAA.
