Jumpseat on CX Cargo?

Post by joyraider »

Hi all,

(don't shoot me if this is the wrong subform to ask this)

being employee of a (undisclosed ;) ) Belgian airline I always try to get on the jumpseat whenever flying, which usually works - you just ask the stewardess if she can ask/explain the captain, who will have no problem most of the time.

Now, I'm planning a trip to Hong Kong on August 20, and the initial plan was to fly there on standby from Frankfurt - quite a hassle. Last week while I was on my way home I saw a CX Cargo 747F taking off from BRU, and I figured "hey, that would be sweet!". So I sent them a mail, which ofcourse got me the expected reply; "sorry, only CX crew on duty, etc etc".

What I'm looking for is either some info about their base here in BRU, some info from who actually works there, or, what would ofcourse be my best bet: one of their pilots on this forum (you never know, right :D ). If someone can help out on this..

Thanks so much in advance!

I believe that staff of FQ, JAF, EAT, TNT, BB(!) are not entitled to travel standby on CX or on other airlines. They may offer travel benefits to their employess, but I guess they don't have ZED agreements with other carriers. So I think the only Belgian companies with ZED/standby are VG and SN. 8-)

FRA a hassle? FRA is quite a convenient airport to catch a connecting flight, even if your connecting flight leaves from the other terminal.

The nice thing about FRA is that as soon as you are on the airside you can find some comfortable spots to sit, read something and have an overview on all aircraft movements.

It would definitely be a unique experience to fly with a freigher and personally I would also love to get on such a flight, however I would expect numerous (possible) complications.

Where and how will you "check in"? Through the crew entrance near b.house?
How will you board the aircraft? Together with the CX pilots?

Who of the CX staff on board is responsible for the passengers?

How will you get off the plane in HKG?
The cargo zone in HKG is on the other side of the runway as the passenger terminal.
Somebody in HKG would have to pick you up from the plane and drive you to the passenger terminal.
I guess you you could join the crew, but I can understand that there is not much willingness to assist you if you are not working for the same company.

On my last trip to the Far East I was very glad to have a PTV in front of me during the 14 hour flight.
Furthermore it's nice to be served meals and drinks regularly throughout such a long flight.
Unfortunately I don't think you can expect any of that on a cargo flight.

I remember that cargo airline Cargolux used to have a ZED agreement with passenger airline XY.
I was always wandering what the benefit was for XY to have a ZED agreement with Cargolux.
The CV pilots were happy to get on the XY flights, but as far as I know none of the XY staff ever got on a CV flight!

>>> OK, maybe not a hassle, but since I live in Leuven it definetely easier to take the train and just get my ass on the plane after 10 minutes :)

I thought Cargolux is operating for another airline (forgot the name now) to Kinshasa? And mind that CX Cargo doens't fly directly BRU-HKG I think. Don't they make stops at Dubai or something?

In Brussels CV operates just one flight. That is the Demavia flight to Kinshasa on Thursday.

Afternoon,

CX Cargo is operating three times a week on Monday, Thursday and Friday. All flights are being operated
via Dubai before going to Hong Kong.
Even when you know a pilot it will be VERY hard to get a jumpseat on the cargo aircraft. The flights will
also encouter some restrictions if you board the plane as a passenger.

Catering is not really a problem! Self service :) . No IFE though, but nice beds and in my opinion better then
economy class.

Thanks for the info :) I guess it's gonna be a no-go then (unless you have some tips - there MUST be some kind of procedure to get non-crew-passengers on a cargo plane, right?).

Is the story any different if you don't really ask for the jump seat in the cockpit, but just for any seat in the pax area behind?

What are the restrictions if indeed a pax gets on board?
The pilots will have to keep the cockpit door closed and locked all the time?

Did you check with the staff travel office of your company? 8-)

Afternoon,

I am pretty sure it will be near to impossible to enter a cargo flight as a passenger if you are not crewmember. I have never experienced this before.

Normally the door on the upperdeck to the flightdeck is always open. When extra operating or positioning crew is on board it will remain open during the flight. I am not sure if the door stays open if there are grooms on board. (people guiding live animals on the maindeck)

The restrictions you have that I am aware off are the following:
- you can't accept Dangerous Goods CAO => Cargo Aircraft Only meaning you might loose some revenue
- insurance
- safety concerns

And there might be more.
Why would CX or another company would risk this for a non crew member when they also operate regular passenger flights. I don't think it gonna happen.

I've been seeing that nice 744 of them frequently over here on EHBK (Maastricht)...

Was wondering about the configuration of that plane. since normally a full 747 is not allowed to start from EHBK. (Runway length would be sufficient (barely) though...).

Now that CLX bought the new 747, the longer version, how are they going to cope with that on EHBK?
They'll still have to fly in the flowers, victoria brass and playstations in....

Here's a Cargolux 744 on aproach to EHBK:
