APRIL

 PAX

In April, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.521.000 pax. This is a decrease with -5,4% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Extra-EU was again in the black figures due to the increase of seats to the USA, Canada, Abu Dhabi.
Intra-EU is still suffering and this caused by Brussels Airlines who offered more then 10% less capacity.

Brussels Airport: 1.5 million passengers in May, down 9.8% on pcp

Passengers
In May 2009 Brussels Airport handled 1,544,000 passengers, a decrease by 9.8% on the previous corresponding period. The slight recovery of the passenger figures during the Easter holidays in April did not continue during the May holidays.
Long haul and low cost remain stable, but the economic crisis severely affects intra-European business traffic.

Cargo
Although the cargo situation is slightly improving compared to the previous months, the 32,782 tons registered in May still represent a decrease by 41% compared to last year. As a result of the capacity reductions implemented by the major cargo carriers, the full-freighter segment again registered a decrease of over 50%. In comparison, cargo transported on board of passenger planes and the integrator segment did better, with a decrease of 22% and 24% respectively.

Aircraft movements
The number of aircraft movements was down 9.9%.

May 2009 May-09 May-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 1,544.1 1,712.4 -9.8%
Cargo (‘000 ton) 32.7 55.8 -41.3%
Aircraft movements (‘000) 20.7 23.0 -9.9%

Year to date
Jan - May 2009 Jan-May-09 Jan-May-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 6,371.4 7,264.7 -12.3%
Cargo (‘000 ton) 176.0 324.8 -45.8%
Aircraft movements (‘000) 95.1 109.6 -13.3%

I don't know if this will change in the future. As we have seen with Cargo B, LGG realy promoted it's presumed better cargo capabilities over BRU. And we can't underestimate the signal Cargo B gave with moving to LGG. So it wouldn't surprise me if LGG would surpass BRU as the cargo airport in Belgium, although the much improved infastructure at Brucargo will again attract some carriers.

Maybe LH Cargo can fill the void left with Cargo B leaving? I assume that there currently is a fairly large overcapacity cargowise.

We all hope that this will be temporary.

Not in the near future. Lufthansa Cargo and its partner Jade Cargo are using AMS for their freight. Jade Cargo is going to increase their flights to AMS and will open cargo flights to Vienna.

Lufthansa Cargo is going to start cargo flights to JFK and ORD out of AMS with MD11 aircraft.

BRU has more then space enough, like you said, there is even now overcapacity and even the new appron is not open yet. We speak then about 10 more cargo parkings. Space enough but no new clients. This is not looking good. And by 2010 EAT will be left BRU for good.

JUNE

 PAX

In June, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.565.000 pax or a decrease with -9,1% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

Long haul and low cost flights are the two segments who are responsible that the figures are less worse. We can see this for several months.

Intra-EU: 1.016.000 pax: -11,4%

Extra-EU: 549.000 pax: -4,6%

Intra-EU is doing better and better each month and this due a very small increase by Brussels Airlines.
Extra-EU is status quo.

Passengers
In July 2009 Brussels Airport handled 1,822,000 passengers, a decrease by 6.6% on the previous corresponding period. The decrease was less significant than in the past few months. Holiday traffic on scheduled flights did relatively well and long-haul traffic even registered a modest growth.

Cargo
With 32,300 tonnes carried, cargo traffic was down 29.4% on the same month last year. Here too, the decrease was smaller than in the first half of the year, but the air cargo sector continues to suffer from the decrease in international trade.

Aircraft movements
Brussels Airport registered 20,871 aircraft movements in July; 9.9% down on last year.

Jul 2009 Jul-09 Jul-08 Evolution
Passengers (‘000) 1,822 1,950 -6.6%

Brussels Airport: 1,7 million passengers in August, a 4.4% decrease

The passenger number of 1,741,400 shows a decrease of 4.4% from the figures of August 2008. This is the smallest dip in passenger numbers since the beginning of this year, but it must be added that August 2008 was not a strong month. The evolution of negative growth was stimulated by a growth in long haul traffic, both with Brussels Airlines and other carriers operating from Brussels Airport. The number of holiday travelers decreased from last year. This is explained by the excellent summer weather in Belgium compared to the heavy rainfall of 2008.

Aircraft Movements
In August, Brussels Airport counted 19.600 movements, a decrease of 5,4% over last year.

August 2009 Aug-09 Aug-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 1,741.4 1,821.3 -4.4%
Aircraft Movements (‘000) 19.6 20.7 -5.4%

Year to date
Jan - Aug 2009 Jan-Aug-09 Jan-Aug-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 11,499.3 12,757.7 -9.9%
Aircraft Movements (‘000) 156.7 176.9 -11.4%

Right ... I guess that's also why the airport located 30km in the south had an increase of 40% :D
Always good fun with official communication from BRU :)

There can be no comparison between Brussel and Charleroi : Charleroi is LCC only, whilst Brussel is legacy first (and manifestly does not want LCC, evidenced by the postponement of the LCC terminal).
When the times are difficult, people take the least expensive, it's true also for airline tickets.

Well, it could be a reason. While CRL is a mainly FR-airport with only a marginal operation of other companies, BRU has the vast majority of leisure (touroperator) flights and those flights are indeed effected by the nice weather, in addition to the economic crisis which makes that more people are seeking vacations closer to home. Another issue is the fact that buiseniss traffic is decreased as wel (again a market CRL has nothing to do with) and the fact that in 2008 BRU saw a good growth ex-EU due to 9W while that company suffered since last autumn and you've get the perfect explanation for the drop in traffic from BRU.

On the other side though, when the economy get's up again, buiseniss markets revive, above the probable rise of 9W-traffic and SN joining Star Alliance, in the near future BRU will grow faster then CRL again. So while CRL is close to it's limits, BRU still has a nice potential.
