If the ATCO's go on strike(?), they have my full support

Your annual well deserved holiday doesn't start this Friday, does it?TCAS wrote:If the ATCO's go on strike(?), they have my full support
Shame on them. They are the second best paid persons in aviation, after cockpit crew. And they still want more. Yep, the reason they will will be "work pressure" - but they will accept it "for now" if they're offered a salary increase, won't they?
Then thousands of working people, many earning half of the ATCO's salaries, go on holiday this weekend. If the ATCO's scr..s up their holiday, they deserve nobody's support.

Re: Local ATC in BRU to strike on 26 april?
I'm NOT a belgocontrol staff member so don't shoot at me please.
But it is not because you're well paid that one can do what they want just with the excuse "you're well paid so do it".
The human boddy has limits, whatever the salary. So it is untrue to say " you are paid 5 times the mean belgian salary, so you work 13hrs at night with the peak hour in the morning". That is in general. Now in aviation, one powerfull word is SAFETY. Do we want controllers that falls asleep? Do we want controllers busy on 5 frequencies at the same time? The answer is NO! They don't have all the rights but we all should listen to them. Same for cockpit crew and cabin crew.
This not to offend anyone but it seems that there are still some people bashing others because of their salaries ... "if you want it, do it".
Have a good day !

- Some ATCO's have also holidays that start this Friday, but would you feel safe going on holiday if the pilot or the ATCO (e.g.) is exhausted, has to manage summer peak hours with understaffing and so on ?LX-LGX wrote: Your annual well deserved holiday doesn't start this Friday, does it?

- It's not always a question of money, we should know why before criticizing...

Apparently some would prefer to see their passengers go on time and die from a mid-air collision.

Isn't that a bit premature? I'd rather go withTCAS wrote:If the ATCO's go on strike(?), they have my full support

Criticizing either way should be well pondered! And we don't even really know of a strike; and if one is announced, there have been recent examples of announced strikes cancelled at the last minute. I keep feeling that the ATCO's are very considerate for the aviation community, and well aware of their responsability. But I have not heard of any progress in their struggle with their management. Who can blame them for increasing the pressure in this delicate way?

Unless you're a foul, you'll never ever compromise Air Safety !!

BTW It's all political (Belgocontrol management = Parti Scandaleux) and if anyone have complaints(?), please ...... H E R E
Remember: ATCO's are NO robots and they're struggling 'more or less' > 10 yrs now !!
Re: Local ATC in BRU to strike on 26 april?
A nice try to make people being scared ... But I do remember Ueberlingen, and well, it did not really happen because ATC at that time was handling too many flights at the same time (in the middle of the night...), wasn't it because some basic rules and procedures were not followed by management AND staff ??FlightMate wrote:Apparently some would prefer to see their passengers go on time and die from a mid-air collision.

Re: Local ATC in BRU to strike on 26 april?
I also remember Ueberlingen and indeed only one controller was handling a low amount of traffic at that time (but a lot of other factors contributed to the crash). This makes it even more horrific if you know that at this moment Belgocontrol's management is investigating if it's feasible to have only one controller working at some of their units (!). No controller wants to be put in a situation similar to the one of Ueberlingen, no wonder they are putting pressure up by announcing a possible strike. And that's only one of the many reasons for the announcement. It has nothing to do with money, but all with safety!

and what if that's why ATC are fighting for now ?euroflyer wrote:But I do remember Ueberlingen, and well, it did not really happen because ATC at that time was handling too many flights at the same time (in the middle of the night...), wasn't it because some basic rules and procedures were not followed by management AND staff ??
Re: Local ATC in BRU to strike on 26 april?
Well, maybe I am naive ... I would have thought that if the working conditions are so that flying becomes unsafe, staff would not continue to work under such conditions. In other industries which are in need of high safety there are bodies and procedures to address any real safety concerns as well. And than something is being done if there are objective safety concerns to address. If it is however just a subjective feeling of some people that they feel they have to work too much, than it is something else ...
I cannot decide which is here the case, I just know that strike is NEVER the best way to achieve what you want and it ALWAYS hurts other people and their lifes unnecessary. Going on strike ONLY indicates you have a badly organised representation in day to day business as employees which is unable (or unwilling!) to convince employers in negotiations and serious cooperation. But I am aware not everyboby shares my opinion here

Problem is people go on strike because others use words such as "NEVER" , "ALWAYS", "ONLY".
Belgocontrol made a strike a couple of weeks ago working "free" for one hour, isn't that a signal indicating something is really wrong ?
