vlm from Brussels to London City ?

Post by Shanti »

It's impossible to book VLM flights from Brussels to LCY (from april)
What could be the reason? Do they stop Brussels to Lcy?
Thanks.

Today VLM/CityJet has an advertisement for this route in the Belgian business newspaper De TIJD. So I don't think they will stop this service between Brussels and London City.

In January only 697 pax were airlifted on this route, minus 73% on 2008.
This means an average loadfactor below 20%. I don’t understand why they continue operating this route.

I don't agree!

4960 passengers, 4 planes a day, flying 22 days in january gives a load factor of 56 passengers a day!

Two things:

* VLM is a business airline. Since the economical crisis less business people are travelling. Most of them are using now the video conferences.

* Some routes are that vulnerable that you can fly them almost with no pax on board.

I've flown BRU-LCY a few times, excellent product, the 17h00 flight is perfect for post-work drinks home in London, but far too often it's too expensive! I think they need find a way to offer return flights regularly for nearer 120euros, more comparable to BA.

VG is "cheap" for those companies who can guarantee a lot of traffic on the route. Large corporations can get high discounts with the necessary flexibility. Furthermore, when travelling for business, cost is not the most important issue (although that has changed a bit). If you can save a few hours by flying direct into the City, this will pay back quite fast (as you can be more efficient)....

That’s what they did in April: 396 pax, minus 84% on 2008 an average of about 5 pax per flight.

Another one, LCY-MAN was – 56% and will be terminated as from June 1, according to (in Dutch) : http://www.luchtvaartnieuws.nl/News/?id=30644

VLM Airlines is axing services between Manchester Airport and London City.

A spokesman said: "The route has been heavily loss-making and, in these tough economic conditions, we are impeded by unfair competition from a subsidised rail network and airline ticket taxes that often make up over 50 per cent of the overall fare.

"We would like to apologise to customers who have made bookings after May 31 for the inconvenience caused. All will be fully refunded
."

VLM started services to London City - a convenient gateway for business travellers heading to the City of London - seven years ago. The spokesman added that VLM remained committed to its profitable operations from Manchester, namely regular services to Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Profitable ? According to CAA-statistics they carried 17.000 on RTM-MAN in 2008, which in my calculation means a loadfactor of about 30%. ANR is doing much better with 30.000.
