Hello !
I plan to buy a SBS-1 decoder, and i saw that Kinetic and AirNav are selling a model that 'seems' to be the same. Both Kinetic and RadarBox forums are in a way not speaking of the 'other' one ...
I wonder which one should be the best (at home and away) ?
Maybe you can help me ?
If i have well understood, the SBS-1 gives an unique code by spotted aircraft, and then, an internet search does provide the register, arr/dep route, ...
So, how to prepare a trip to a place where you have never been ? I mean, if i go to a place, and have no internet access, i will only have the hex code of unknown aircraft on the screen ? Am i right/wrong ?
How to deal with this ?
I have read that a dedicated antenna (like BS1100) is to be considered for better results (than with the supplied antenna).
Many thanks for your help,
L@urent

Re: SBS-1 decoder ; choose Kinetic's one or RadarBox ? Questions
the Kinetic SBS-1 decoder is definitely the best of the Mode S ADS-B receivers
(the Airnav box is not called SBS-1 .. SBS-1 is the type of the Kinetic receiver)
According to tests done by different users the AirNav receiver is less sensitive.
The main reason to get the SBS-1 is the huge community support
(extra software, databases, etc..)
make also sure you checkout the Yahoo user group(s) where you can find detailed logs, data, utilities, etc...
via these communities you can download a pre-filled database which enables you to translate the ICAO 24 bit mode S address into the corresponding registration and corresponding aircraft type code (ICAO)
So you do not have to do a manual lookup.
In the professional world, a common worldwide or european database does not exist. The only source of information is the great community effort done by the SBS1 users.
(not even on national level.. except for a few countries who publish the 24bit addresses publically...)
also - be advised that the (official) software of both boxes show the position of aircraft in realtime but the data output are 5 min delayed.
