Ryanair to withdraw 6 planes from HHN...

Post by beaucaire »

Based on a decision by the airports operator,FRAPORT,to chage a new 3€ passenger charge in order to make the airport operation profitable.Currently HHN charges only 15.5€/pax -way below what the charges in France are.(from 26-32 €..)
So be careful in Belgium not to play with the fire ..

It is illegal under EU rules for businesses to fix prices between them :

Ryanair is the one who will lose the most from that decision: they keep only a few planes in the largest air traffic area of Germany. No doubt other airlines will be happy to pick up the former Ryanair passengers.

Yes it's illegal for them to fix them and talk about it, but if the other airports would just "follow" the Hahn increase, it's legal! Just as with fare hikes of the airlines in the USA.

Exactly ...
It's a good way to put pressure on the airport, but they might come back anyway later. Like they did in Holland.

Who would go and take a flight at Hahn, unless it's very cheap ? A high fare carrier won't pick up any pax at Hahn.

Ryanair seems not opposed to invest in the airport company running Frankfurt-Hahn airport as minority share-holder..

Ryanair will not withdraw their planes from HHN. It was "just" a succesful blackmailing of the regional authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate (the German 'Land' in which HHN is situated). The idea of the additional fee has been withdrawn. However, now a big discussion has started as FRAPORT is not prepared to continue to cover the losses of HHN which will stay forever without any further sources of income. The same is true for the state of 'Hessen' (the state in which FRA is situated) which owns some 17 percent of HHN as well. They are nor prepared to pay for the regional policy of Rhineland-Palatinate ... So both want to sell their shareholdings in HHN. Lets see how all this will develop.

@buzz
there are certainly not enough people living very near HHN to support such an airport and its operations, without the pax from the FRA/Rhein-Main area, Luxembourg, the Cologne/Bonn area etcetera.

Completely true.

It goes the other way around as well though, there are not enough people living in the city of Frankfurt to support an airport like FRA, without the pax from all the surrounding region. That's how an airport works.

Yes, but ... to be honest, without having the exact statistics at hand, in the area lets say of 30 km around FRA you will have more than 1.5 million people living (take alone the big towns of Frankfurt, Offenbach, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and you have roughly 1.3 million). Make the same calculation of 30 km around HHN and I would be VERY surprised of you come up with more than 100'000 people ... So there is a BIG difference 8-)
