Maybe the reason why I edited the reaction.... or couldn't you figure that out yourself? Oh yes, the info I got was not from facebook, it was first hand from a 'funny' crew member. It sounded like a source that could be trusted... afterwards, i got my doubts since it would be too much too fast... maybe it is human to 'hope' something nice like that would happen to Bru. Anyway, even though it might be a joke or a hoax, the idea is not bad at all...
LH will have some 747-400 left over as they introduce the A380; it might be difficult to sell them (except for freighter conversion maybe), so why not re-use them?
The extra capacity, the extra range, the cargo capacity, everything would fit perfectly for the Br.A. African network...
Let the managers do thier homework...

I don't see this as a hoax, I think that it's likely, very likely even.
In the actual state of the economy, B744's are indeed not very attractive. UA have been parking theirs in the deserts.LH is receiving the A380's and they don't have anywhere to put those B744's.
SN's utilisation of the B744 will be way more profitable than conversion to freighter and operation as freighter only...that until A330's become available for SN.
Of course SN could get some ex-LX A332's but they are in such high demand due to the B787 delays that it would be a waste giving them to SN...
So the possibility for SN to get these B744's is real.

Of course, everybody would like to see a 744 in SN colors.
But when you expose facts, let's it be facts then.
I still remember SN willing to get 747 a few years ago, in order to increase their cargo shipping.
And what about cargo B? ex-sn managers, ex-sn pilots and chief pilots. Do you think there might be a future alliance or take-over (by LH as well?)

OK, so it was a hoax...
But I could still see a 747-400M in SN colors. Since LH only uses them as full pax plane, they will become useless when the first A380's start arriving. It will be very tough to sell them, even for a conversion to full cargo plane since the 748 is looming around the corner and there are plenty of younger 747 to be converted to freighter.
So LH could sent these planes into scrapping, it will bring some money in, without a doubt. (I saw on CNN a scraped 742 which generated over 8 mln USD for spare parts, but they could also make it earn more money with one of their subsidiaries.
LX is out of the question, since the Swiss need more and 'smaller' planes to serve their spread-out long haul network since they don't have a focus market the way SN has. The current A333's are big enough to operate the SN flights most of the year in terms of pax, but SN could use more cargo volume and conveniently, let the 744M provide this. They give SN the same seat capacity the 333, but with a lot more cargo, generating more money for SN year round, which makes these African destinations more profitable and brings in more money to develop the company further. In summer, when extra capacity is needed, SN could redeploy one of the 333's to Africa, offering a daily connection to two African cities on the East-Coast (FIH and one other) alongside the daily 744M service to FIH.
These 744M may not be the most economical planes around, but neither are SN's current A333's which are not the youngest around, either. So a 744M would bring the same amount of pax return, but would more then double the cargo return, which is the real money maker for SN in Africa.
I think the board of SN should at least think about deploying a 744 to Africa, and if these route seems successful, they could start deploying more of them, once LH starts retiring theirs.
Or just try out. Replace the Lufthansa crane on the tail by the dotted B and the Lufthansa titles on the fuselage with Brussels Airlines. If the route is successful, they could still paint the plane in full SN colors.

The only issue with a 744M is that regulations in Europe are very tough on them and they are tending to forbid them. I think that in FAA world, combi's have been banned.
I agree with Conti that SN should be considering the option. They can get 2 B744's for close to nothing, operate them at very high yields, and make Air DC a feeder. 2 BAE's and 1 B737 + the usual pax can easily fill a B744, that way SN can get a morning and a late afternoon flight to FIH, both packed full with pax and cargo.
Additionally, FIH is only a 6.5K km flight, so a B744 would be able to take up max payload. If they accept high-density freight which would mostly be the case for Africa, they can make alot of money, even without the combi.
