Switzerland schengen or not schengen in november

Post by bae146be »

Hey! I am flying next week to Zurich. Could someone please tell me if the flights from Swiss International leave from the A terminal or the B terminal in Brussels?

Switzerland is not in the EU, nor in the Schengen agreement. Flights to Switzerland leave from terminal B, and you can buy tax free.

But Switzerland is due to join Schengen. I heard it was originally planned for november '08, but has been postponed till somewhere in 2009.

That was the reason of my question. I was informed by the internet that Switzerland would join shengen in november 2008, so I supposed to leave from terminal A.
If i look all the answers looks like i will leave from B. Is there any airline employee that can confirm all this?

Switzerland and Liechtenstein

Switzerland, which belongs neither to the EU nor to the European Economic Area, has been associated to the Schengen area and is set to implement the Schengen rules, together with Liechtenstein, by December 2008.Similarly to the arrangements made between the EU, Norway, and Iceland, the accession agreement concluded between the EU and Switzerland provides for an exemption of the application of the rules concerning controls of goods at borders. However, the much stricter provisions in the Schengen Borders Code providing for the abolition of internal border checks do not contain any exemption with respect to Switzerland. The Swiss authorities are of the opinion that they will not be entitled to perform systematic customs or other checks on persons for the mere reason that they cross the border, once the Schengen rules have been implemented in Switzerland; they are planning to continue to perform spot-checks, which are based on risk analysis of the authorities.

Liechtenstein signed a Schengen-related association with the European Union on 28 February 2008. Contrary to Switzerland, Liechtenstein belongs to the European Economic Area. The country also has an open border with Switzerland, but for the time being still conducts border checks on its border with Austria, an EU member, which are staffed by Swiss authorities.

For Switzerland, its open border with Liechtenstein had been an important issue. If it would not have been possible for Liechtenstein to implement the Schengen rules at the same time as Switzerland (as some EU states want to use the Schengen enlargement to pressure Liechtenstein over fraud issues), an interim solution would have had to be found, in order to avoid Switzerland introducing border checks with Liechtenstein, even for a short time.

As it was with the "new" EU countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the point of time when the schengen rules will apply might be different here as well, depending on which kind of border you cross (land, water, air). As far as I have heard, the airports will apply the rules later than the land crossings (was it April 09?), but I have no confirmed information available.
