Dragonair's engeneering department has been closed down as HAECO takes over maintainance duties of Dragonair fleet too. Was rather inevitable as one aim of the merger was to spread cost. Not exactly good news for Dragonair employees, but I believe it is the right direction for Cathay Pacific group. The future looks bright for Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airport.

I would think the Dragonair staff will be able to get jobs at HAECO since HAECO just opened up a new hanger at HKG last Decemeber, and another one in early 2009. Line maintenance, I'm sure with the addition of Dragonair, needs people too for HAECO. Moreover, HAECO is expanding, i.e. new joint venture in the Middle East and new line maintenance facility in Singapore, and new hanger at TAECO.
CX's expansion helps HAECO, in which CX owns 20% or so.

News updated on CX's interest of A380/B748 and A350/B787. Nothing new in my opinion, but at least we have some words directly from CX.

Dragonair will join Oneworld as a affiliate of Cathay Pacific (Cathay now owns Dragonair) on 1st November 2007. This gives Cathay and Oneworld much greater access to mainland China. Together with JAL joining the alliance earlier this year, Oneworld now has superb coverage of E/SE Asia, and its major hubs are Tokyo and Hong Kong - the two most important business cities in Asia:

Dragonair's resuming flights to Kathmandu, Nepal this December. Four times a week with A320. Loads of nepali immigrants who have so far put up with Nepal Airlines (RA) should find this a refreshing choice. With Cathay Pacific, the group will have the best conncections to North America and Japan of any airline currently serving Nepal.

On purchase of freighters:
Boeing Co.'s 747-8 ``makes a very good freighter and we'll probably be making a decision on freighters before we make a decision on any more passenger aircraft. So that's likely to be the one that comes first, and it's likely to come soon. ``We've got new aircraft delivery through 2009, but we might want something toward the end of 2009, and then onward from there.''
On A380 superjumbos of Airbus SAS:
``We keep it under constant evaluation. But right now we see the best way to build our hub and build our network is with planes like the 777 on the passenger side. We'll continue to buy regional aircraft like A320s and A330s.
``We'll look at the A380, the 747-8 Intercontinental, the 787 and eventually the A350. We keep these things under constant evaluation. One day, I'm sure we'll want a larger aircraft, and then that's when the A380 will really come into contention.''

Cathay Pacific, after the failed China Eastern bid with Air China, is going back to plan A - organic growth, says CX CEO. The one-year delayed Shanghai-based cargo airline venture with Air China is still on.

Based on what Cathay wants and timing, I still think A350s is a better fit than B787s. CX doesn't have to replace the B773s til 2013 at the earliest (since their first B773 was delivered in 1998, assuming 15 years life). A330s may need to be replaced a bit earlier since their first A330s was delivered around 1994-95 timeframe. However, they sure can just temporily replaced the older ones with the newer ones of the same type. It's more urgent to replace the gas-buster A340s.

The 'gas busters' might not be completely out of service till 2013. It all depends on where CX will put the new B773ERs. The new ones delivered this year will be used for North American expansion and if the A340-600s go next year (which they might) more 773ERs will be needed to replace them as well. Starting late 2008/2009 it will be interesting to see whether Cathay choose to put the 773ERs on busy routes like FRA, SFO, CDG to replace the 744s or replace the 343s on AMS, AKL and JNB. I would personally prefer the new A343s stick around for a bit longer till Cathay can develop new routes like MAN, ZRH, MOW and ORD.
