Pan Am?

I have a question: I thought Pan Am was bancrupt and totaly gone, but recently I have seen pictures of Pan Am 727's (even some with winglets!) in action. Are these remains of the old airline, or do they have totaly different objectives?

Pan Am no longer fly international routes like they used to, but they do fly some domestic services in the US.

Why dont they fly international then anymore , or are there plans to start again ... its nice to see this name again in the air ... to bad no international then ....

The old PanAm went bankrupt, indeed. Its assets were taken over by Delta Air Lines.

Some investors bought the PanAm name and logo from Delta and started a new airline on a US regional basis. It is quite different from the old PanAm and has nothing to do with it.

Well the aircraft look exactly the bloody same as when the "original" Pan Am were flying, it was easy to assume it was the same airline that was now just flying domestic services!!!!!

is just the same it is Pan Am They have the name and logo its just an other owner thats the only difference

I just think that are the only things that are the same as the old Pan Am, it looks it has a total different market as the old Pan Am (low cost, from secondary airports). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's a totaly different airline, but with the same logo and titles, not?

You are absolutely right. And that's exactly what I wrote above:

Not quite correct.
The PanAm assets (not unlike Sabena's) were sold to pieces.

In 1991 its routes to the UK (including those precious LHR slots) were sold to United who had already bought PanAm's transpacific routes (and SFO base) a few years earlier when business started going wrong.

Delta AirLines bought the transatlantic routes to Europe (except the UK) plus Africa and India.
Delta also bought aircrafts and East cost bases in JFK ("WorldPort"), BOS and MIA.

PanAm's hotel chain InterContinental was sold to British group Bass.

And the name and logo were auctionned.

A former PanAm executive bought the rights and re-launched PanAm (or rather a new carrier using the name and logo of the legendary airline) in 1995.
It was once again based at JFK (this time in part of T6) and flew a fleet of A300, B737-400 and B727-200 accross the nation to LAX and SFO and south to FL and the Carribean.
It was a low cost carrier.
It went down in 1998.

The same year, the remains were sold to a Pittsburg, PA rail company. Since then it operates schedule 727 services on the East cost and the odd charter flight to the Bahamas or Carribean.
And it has survived the current crisis!

I hope this was of some interest...

Well that's very interesting.
Best of all is hat some if not all of the 727 they are flying were originally owned by the "original" PanAm

fftopic: What happened with the SABENA brand

Who has the rights to this name (I presume the logo is SNBA's property as it is the same)

The Sabena name belongs to the curators of the bankruptcy. They are still trying to sell Sabena Technics and Sabena Hotels, which interestingly are still carrying the Sabena name (and very high!).

It's a pity that SNBA can't be renamed Sabena in the future, as Sabena is a better name and less cumbersome than SN Brussels Airlines!!

Haven't the two Brussels hotels already been sold?
I thought only the three African hotels remained to be sold...
Could anyone please confirm?

I think the hotels have been sold, looking on the internet. They all have new names and one (at least) is part of the Best Western group (that is the one near Centraal Station in Brussels).

They all have the old "Enjoy our Hospitality" slogan though (reminds me of the Sabena poster in Manchester airport which said "Enjoy our Company".)
