In August, Brussels Airport received 1.796.000 pax. That's an increase with 8.1%!! when we compare this with the same month last year.
Intra-EU: 1.141.000: an increase with 8.3%
Extra-EU: 656.000: an increase with 7.9%
Reasons: US Airways started daily flights in June. Northwest latest flight was on 14.08.07: also a daily flight. Jet Airways started daily flights out of India to North Amercia with a stop over in Brussels.
Intra-EU flights were feeded with strong demand out of Austria, Portugal and Sweden.
Extra-EU flights were feeded with strong demand out of Egypt, Turkey and North America.
What I have read lately is that with the partly move of DHL, Brussels Airport will lose 350.000 tons of cargo. But in the mean time new cargo airlines are arrived at Brucargo as Jordanian Cargo and Cargo B Airlines. Saudi Arabian is increasing their flights to Brussels and the question is what Singapore cargo will do with their 7th freedom.
So, you will lose some cargo but on the other hand you have also new cargo.
Excellent figures! I'm quite surprised to see the very large growth of intra-EU traffic. I had expected growth of this order for extra-EU flights, due to the likes of US and 9W, but to see the intra-EU traffic grow even more is quite a shocker really!
Lufthansa and Swiss have registered also very strong Intra-EU figures in
August. Those are indeed airliners, figures here are for an airport, but those two are big home players. So I expect that the airports in Germany and Switzerland will also have strong Intra-EU figures.
About 9w and US: yes, those two will taken around half the 7,9% for their part. You will see a bigger increase in Extra-EU percentages next month because 9w started up their second route via Bru.
Its going the right way. But hopefully they can also attract new carriers next year.
In September there were 23.745 movements on the airport. That's an increase with 3,12% when we compare this with the same month last year.
PS: Brussels Airport was, together with Liege Airport, the only airport with an increase in movements. The other airports: Ostend, Charleroi and Antwerp had very strong decrease in movements.

We'll see a further increase, especially in November and December since the start of new routes from Jet Airways (Chennai and JFK); additional flights from Ethiad (3>4), Hainan (3>4), Ethiopian (3>6); additional flights from SN to Africa; new flights from Vueling to Malaga, Madrid, Sevilla, Alicante (will this happen with the problems they have?); new flights from EasyJet to Nice, Berlin; new flights from Sterling to Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen; ...
We might even see double digits for November/December, no?

You cannot compare the trend in movement figures of Ostend, Charleroi and Antwerp with the one of Brussels. Those airports deal with a lot of VFR leisure traffic and such traffic depends totally on the weather. By the way, also other factors count here. In Ostend e.g. Noordzee Helicopters Vlaanderen still operated from the airport last year. But in january they moved to their own heliport just outside the fences of Ostend. Their movements are no longer counted in the statistics of Ostend but I can assure you that NHV flies a lot more than a year ago. And they still need the airport's airspace for every flight they make, ask any ATC controller working overthere.

In September, Brussels Airport handled 65.500 tons of cargo. That's an increase with 6,6% when we compare this with the same month last year.
This figure could be higher but due to the high number of cancelled cargo flights during that month it stays at 65.500 tons.
PS: Singapore Cargo will commence two weekly flights to Chicago and Los Angeles and this under the new 7th freedom. An other new flight will be operated directly to Singapore. They will also move their Africa flights to AMS. Further growth is planned in 2008.
Cathay Pacific cargo will start a 7th flight on 18 January.
