Ryanair change its Check-in policies

Post by vueling »

With effect for new bookings made from Thursday, 20th September onwards:

* Web check-in will be free for passengers travelling with hand luggage only* and will also include free priority boarding at the departure gate.
* Passengers who do not avail of free web check-in will be charged £2/€3 for using airport check in facilities
* **Priority boarding will be made available for purchase online as well as through the existing sales points - call centres and airports for a fee of £2/€3 per person

"From the 20th September 2007, all passengers making new reservations on Ryanair.com will have the option to select the free web check-in and priority boarding service. Passengers who wish to travel with checked baggage will be subject to a small fee to reflect the cost of airport check in desk facilities."

Ryanair press release : http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/news.php ... -en-240807

Is that mean that when you want to checkin a bag you must pay per flight:
- 6 eur per bag
- AND 3 eur for using the classical checkin desk ?

HOLY SHIT 3 EUROS.....no kidding !!!

Leasing a B737-800 costs only about 3000 EUROS an hour without fuel.
And it takes only about 3000 kg of fuel to fly it around for an hour....

Flying FR is getting more expensive if you check in luggage.

It's like these LCC's are always coming up with new ways of chasing away potential customers...

Can't see anything wrong. You just pay for what you want or need. You don't check bags you don't pay... You print your own boarding pass so you don't pay. This is the only way to keep travel as cheap as possible.
If you have 50 bags and 150 pax on a flight and bagage handling costs you 150€ you have two choices: you charge every pax 1€ or you charge each bag 3€...

I like the way Ryanair announces new charges:
RYANAIR MAKES WEB CHECK-IN FREE TO REDUCE
AIRPORT QUEUES

* Web Check-in/Priority boarding service entirely free
* Airport check-in desk service charged at £2/€3 per person
* ALL OTHER PASSENGERS CAN PURCHASE Priority boarding online

Ryanair, Europe’s largest international airline, today (Friday, 24th August 2007) announced new incentives to encourage passengers to use Ryanair’s "Check’N’Go" web check in service, while at the same time discouraging passengers from checking in bags or using airport check in queues. Ryanair’s web check-in service will be entirely free and enables passengers travelling with only hand luggage to avoid airport check-in and go straight through security, cutting out the queues and overcrowding which are now commonplace at many airports.

With effect for new bookings made from Thursday, 20th September onwards:

* Web check-in will be free for passengers travelling with hand luggage only
* and will also include free priority boarding at the departure gate.
* Passengers who do not avail of free web check-in will be charged £2/€3 for using airport check in facilities
* **Priority boarding will be made available for purchase online as well as through the existing sales points - call centres and airports for a fee of £2/€3 per person

Announcing these new incentives for passengers, Ryanair’s Peter Sherrard said:

"Ryanair’s web check in and priority boarding service has proven very popular among passengers by freeing them from check-in queues and departure gate queues. However clearly charging for this service has acted as a disincentive. We expect that providing this service free of charge (with Ryanair’s generous hand baggage allowance of 10 kilos) will significantly increase usage. From the 20th September 2007, all passengers making new reservations on Ryanair.com will have the option to select the free web check-in and priority boarding service. Passengers who wish to travel with checked baggage will be subject to a small fee to reflect the cost of airport check in desk facilities.

"Also from that date all passengers not using our web check service will be able to purchase our **priority boarding service on Ryanair.com as well as the existing call centre and airport ticket desks. This will make it much easier for passengers, particularly those travelling with families, to purchase our priority boarding service. These new measures will, we believe, encourage more and more passengers to travel without checked in baggage and use Ryanair’s free web check-in and priority boarding service. These passengers will do so entirely free of charge, whilst avoiding the check in queues and being among the first to choose their seats onboard. Our web check-in/priority boarding service is undoubtedly the way forward, and with Ryanair’s combination of lowest fares, more flights, best punctuality and now, free of charge web check in and priority boarding, passengers have never had a better deal on Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline".

*Certain passenger restrictions apply see online check in website for details
** Passengers with special needs who have pre-advised Ryanair of their condition are not required to purchase priority boarding as seats will already be reserved onboard and they will be boarded after general boarding has been completed.

Ends. Friday, 24th August 2007
A new charge is thus called "making web checking free".

Well... yes. That's clearly the goal here, no surprise...
What's wrong with that?

So as long as you have no luggage, check in online, don't want to get on the plane first, and don't eat or drink, you can enjoy Ryanair's low prices.

I wonder how long it will take Ryanair to realize that people are actually paying for their flight, but not paying for sitting down on that flight.

It's time they started announcing that standing during the flight is free! For a small surcharge, you can sit down if you so choose...

Travelling standing is still forbidden in an airplane, so Ryanair will probably try to change this regulation
But if you get a free check in with FR (as long as you don't check in luggage) don't forget that there is no seat allocation. FR makes you print your boarding card so they don't have to pay for the paper of the boarding card.
One of the problems wiht FR is that it is a company making a lot of money by fooling pax or trying to make them fall into its traps (you need to read their Terms and Conditions for EVERYTHING and VERY CAREFULLY), if you don't want to be faced with bad surprises.
MOL wants to make even more money on top of his huge profits and doesn't care if it is not ethical.

But you know, I like the idea very much. It means that smart passengers like me can travel cheap and those who are stupid or ignorant pay for their profits. You can even say that those ignorant passengers who don't read the fine print subsidize my flights.

I don't see how this is wrong in any way... I always found it dumb that you had to pay to check yourself in online, and that using the check-in at the airport was free. I doesn't require a professor to see that only the desks kost FR money...

Dear loginas : you must be one of those extremely smart travellers who doesn't need to check in luggage because he travels with two shirts and two boxer shorts to last all week long and have one of the smallest carry on luggage around. Of course, you can have your shirts and underwear washed every day by the hotel (usually expensive ; so add the laundry bill to your air ticket). I am unfortunately one of those stupid pax that check in luggage because I carry plenty of clothes also on business trips in order to always have a clean shirt available if necessary (meaning sometimes changing twice a day according to temperature/climate and to work or social imperatives).
And what about families with children going on holidays who cannot put everything in one 15kg suitcase ? Are they stupid too, and you would be the only smart person around ? Come on, a bit of modesty wouldn't do any harm.

to air key west:
I have made up my mind about Ryanair, and came to the conclusion that I will never use them again for business purposes - after I missed a meeting due to a 4 hour delay.
The Kaunas creature is that guy that storms the airplane to have that emergency exit seat. And when he gets it , he feels so nice .
We call it Mr. Bean.

I have never sat in a exit seat nor stormed a plane. But yes, I did use some tricks to get on a plane as passenger number ~70 instead of being last when arriving to gate last.

And I am happy to pay for my luggage or check-in or whatever that I need and when I need. But not when I don't.

But you now, before Ryanair, my fellow Lithuanians used to go to Western Europe by buses, sitting in seats that were cramped more than Ryanair's for 20-40 hours and still paying a lot more. Flying from your own pocket was out of reach.

Ohh, be careful  Very soon someone will tell FR that actually when checking in online you use their servers, IT infrastructure, data connection etcetera, hey this is not for free for them !! So actually, eh, the next step - once FR has realised this - will be to make the desk check in 5€ and the online check in "just" 2€. And they probably will again find a nice sounding headline for this!

To be honest, it is absolutly annoying what these LCC and especially Ryanair do, but as long as there are enough people stupid enough running into their traps it seems to work for them.

Honestly, before I have to read for 30 minutes to find out how much a trip will really cost, accept their sometimes very inconvenient departure and arrival times, fly often to Airports somewhere in the middle of nowhere and sit on the bus afterwards as long as in the plane and than book each of the services I need individually (and therefore decide 4 or 5 month ahead if I will travel with luggage or not, if I want to be first on the plane or not, etcetera) I prefer to pay a few Euros more (if at all :!: ) and travel with a real full service carrier where I can decide a day before the departure if I need luggage or not (maybe depending on the weather?!), if I want to check in online or not (depending on where I am the day before and if Internet is available there).

But, hey, everybody has to find his/her own way of travelling ...

C'mon you negatively minded people.
Look at the bright side of life.

The use of the toilets is still free on board !

Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have said this too loud.
Well no. They know it already but are too shy to come out with all this in one shot. :D

Someone there must have already calculated the cost for the installation of pay machine to open the toilet door. Say 2 EUR in coins but only 1 EUR with credit card as they don't need to carry the extra weight...?
No better : a prepaid card. Lightweight and cash in advance

Aaaah !

Anyhow the bottom line remains : WYPIWYG. What you pay is what you get.
Well, most of the time.

I have never flown with them, but I like Vueling's web site and booking procedures and conditions. Very clear, simple, no tricks, not traps. Maybe a model to be followed by all carriers (LCCs and tradional carriers alike). Miles away from the Ryanair model.
