Canon finally did it ! They released the EOS 40D ...

And it has the following features :

10MP sensor (3888x2592) as expected,
The EOS Cleaning System, as first introduced on the EOS 400D,
A new AF-system,
A durable shutter for up to 100.000 shots (not like my 10D that died after 42.000 shots),
A larger 3 inch screen with LiveView,
A highspeed drive mode of 6,5 frames per second. (Low speed drive mode is 3 fps),
An imagebuffer for 75 large JPEG's or 17 RAW images,
A minimal form of weather-sealing

All-in-all what looks to be become a succesful successor of the EOS 30D.

Also, Canon today announced 2 new EF-S lenses, both equiped with a 4-stop Image Stabiliser :

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (29-88 equivalent)
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (88-400 equivalent)

Well it seems Nikon has already an answer on the move of Canon.
Different new models but the D300 is the concurrent for this model for approx. 2000euro's expected.

Indeed intended to compete with the 40D ... but the price and specs are higher.

D300 with 12Mp for 2000€
40D with 10Mp for 1300€

So it all started with the D100 and 10D being allmost equal and look where it is now. Allmost 2 different categories of camera's ...
One has to keep in mind that these lines were entry models into DSLR for amateurs. Now the entry models are the Dxx and xxxD models of Nikon and Canon respectively. This basically means that the D300 and 40D can go for higher specs. I am convinced that Canon doesn't want to go too high in specs, because it would otherwise eat up the sales of one of it's other camera's, the 5D. This one also competes with the D300 as it is a 12,7Mp for 2300€ ...

So basically, one can assume that the D300 was intended to compete with the EOS 5D, by being cheaper.
