Don't forget that LCCs create the demand, so "nobody" can really forecast how a market will respond to some route opening, and I don't think IATA numbers is a relevant figure, even if it could help of course.
They do create some extra volume by lowering the fares indeed, but don't overestimate this.

EZY will play safe in a first round, opening lines which it knows will do well because they see a lot of volume (i.e. multiple day frequencies); it really is no coincidence they take GVA, SXF and NCE as first 3 destinations, rather than BRS, NCL and let's say LTN (which are also easyjet bases)...
lcc wrote:i think that BRUMXP, BRUEDI or BRUFLR should be possible next EZY destinations
I think the next one will indeed be BRU-MXP, for the same reason as the 3 they took now: high volume routes, which easily can accomdate a once daily (and after that even twicve daily EZY flight)

BRU-EDI or BRS is something I think they will be more cautiously launching, maybe only if and when they decide to base a plane here.

BRU-FLR? Make it PSA and I can agree it may be another candidate for when they base planes in BRU....

BRUPSA yes sorry

BRUFLR is operated by SN and the prices are exhorbitant (does it exist in english?). Btw, I think it is easy for EZY to define which routes to open:
FR is on the route?
SN is on the route?
Vueling is on the route?
If yes at the first 2 questions + no at the last one, they will open it!

MXP, CIA, MRS, PSA will be next EZY destinations :D

I am sure Brussels Airlines was expecting Easyjet's arrival in Brussels.

Virgin Express had a gentleman's agreement with EZ that kept them out of BRU; now that Virgin Express is gone, Easyjet will expand agressively in BRU.

:offtopic: but maybe nice to know.

EZS has requested slots for a 3th daily GVA - BRU flight.
Schedules are in the afternoon: STA: 1630 STD: 1700 LT

IMHO this alien LCC attack is a battle that SN can loose except if they start up more long haul operations to the West and East and not only to the South. Former Sabena destinations like BOS, IAD, ATL, EWR, YUL, DFW ensured a lot of transit traffic when BRU used to be a "hub" for its homebase carrier. Today I see very few transit passengers (in- or outboud from Africa) on European flights .

Do you have proof or is it just speculation? Fair enough EZY announced its arrival when it was sure that Virgin-express would dissappear but other than that you need to back up your claim...

Personnally I longed for LCC's to come at BRU.
Good to see them coming and expanding, the new facilities also welcome.

Sn had years to prepare for this competition.
How long can they continue operations using out of date equipment ?
I fear that by 2010 they will have lost the battle.

Also for the end user, it's not very attractive to board an unconfortable AVRO with hardly a meal to compensate for.
I think a major overhaul of the fleet is a top priority and refining their service offer (at least if the ticket price justifies that) would make lots of good.

BMI opted to purchase the A321 model and more A330-300, a logical step if you project the traffic demand at the expected delivery time (from 2010) and the advantage of wider cabins offering a better seat revenue.

On the other hand, AC has reoriented their strategy towards the regional Embraer195 model, thus trying to prove that they can effectively compete on the low cost segment with this type. Maybe a sound move also.

yes, ericair, b.air must become a hub airline at BRU otherwise they will not fill their planes outside the two main summer months. And to face competition with deep discounters (mainly Ryan, but also to some extend EZY), and given the shortage of pilots, why don't they explore the avenue of letting Flybabboo fly the GVA-BRU route with their new EMB190 in codeshare with sn, and why could they not explore a partnership with Helvetic on the BRU-ZRH route (instead of LX) in order to be able to offer more competitive fares than the ones set by LX before EZY discovers the very lucrative BRU-ZRH route (could probably easliy be flown by EZY from its Geneva base : GVA BRU ZRH BRU GVA)

I would like to come back on the statement of Vinnie Winnie about the gentleman's agreement between Virgin Express and Easyjet.

This was indeed true. Sir Richard Branson and Stelios Haji-Ioannou (I guess Stelios is not a "sir" yet :)) have agreed not to compete on the Brussels market. They discussed that during a lunch together.

That is what a former employee of Virgin Express (a very important employee, trust me) told me 3 years ago. For the absolute non-believers: I even have these words on tape!

About that agreement, I've also heard this from various people in the aviation industry back in second half of the 90's. (1997-2000 period)

Ok more LCC form BRU.
But when will we have the final decision or planning for the LCC terminal?
On short term, no problem, but if they have more and more flights it will be a terminal problem

I can give you an answer on this one. The final decision is to be taken by the end of this year. When they are going to build it, then it takes an other 18 to 24 months.

Probably to late to avoid congestion and confusion in service to the customers.

If this is true (and I also believe it is), the European Commission's DG Competition should have had a look at it!

GLA: PIC is not GLA anyway not enough demand for glasgow! Edinburgh usually considered as the gateway to Scotland.
Prestwick (or PIC as you put it) may not exactly be in Glasgow but it is only 40 minutes away and the airport does serve the Glasgow market. I have to disagree with you strongly regarding the demand. I have flown with Ryanair from Prestwick to Charleroi many times. The flights have always been around 90% capacity and sometimes even 100% full. Admittedly Ryanair have cut back on this route but this has been for several reasons. I don't really care whether I fly from Glasgow International or Glasgow Prestwick to Charleroi or Brussels and whether I fly with Ryanair or Easyjet. As long as the flight times are ok and the total cost of the flights are reasonable!
By the way, I wish someone would start flying into Ostend from the UK, that would save me the five hour journey from Charleroi Airport!!!
