That will happen right after SN takes over AF-KLM...

BA have a succesfull partner, in wich they own 10%. Why the hell would they (or anyone else for that matter) be interested in AZ anyway?

It will be liquidated, and then the best peaces will form the foundation of a good new airline, wich will have a chance of being taken over by one of the mayors if it can prove itself...

Well the sources are usually pretty reliable, they are all in the airline industry, but as with any rumour sometimes things lose their real meaning in the translation.

But I've heard it from more than one source.. soooooooooo we'll see what transpires in the next few days.

For the sake of the Italians I hope the KLM/Air France bid is sucessful.

BA can't even collude with it's competitors on price fixing without stuffing it up. Their chances of them taking over a complex, Political beast like Alitalia and making it sucessful would have to be mimimal.

They're probably just trying to make life difficult for other bidders and ensure they pay top dollar, which is fair enough tactics.

In any case I think Alitalia is really a bit of a side show. The real prize is Iberia which is a much better asset IMO. All bidders would be wise to keep their powder dry for that fight.

Is BA sure they still have the funds available ? A 550 Million Dollar fine is not exactly what I'd call 'peanuts' ... :?

AZ is maybe a side show but the italian market is not.
All majors know that. They can live happily with the current airlines situation (or mess?) in Italy because they profit a lot from that, but be sure they will watch closely any development that could endanger the current "laissez-faire".

IB for instance are dependant like the rest on the profitable italian market and of course it makes a lot of sense to try to couple IB with a carrier strong enough on the italian market place. Imv BA are not just "making the auctions raise", they're probably investigating ways to achieve an harmonious mediterranean marriage.
