Europe and Japan Discuss New Supersonic Airliner

Post by Comet »

I have just submitted this as a news item.

Europe and Japan are reportedly discussing building a new supersonic airliner which would fly at mach 4, twice as fast as Concorde, with three times the passenger capacity (300) and double the range.

The aircraft would have fuel emissions slashed by 75% and the noise levels would be comparable to the Boeing 747, making it more acceptable to a wider number of airports than Concorde had been.

Certainly does Andre! There is no more info on that, certainly I've not seen any, it was in the financial section of our newspaper yesterday, but I was only able to submit it last night.

I wonder what it would look like

And also who would be building it

Do you think there is a market for such a plane :?:

If the planes will really have all those characteristics, there could definately be a market for it. The question is just to see how high the fares will be :?:

If the extra fee will be reasonable for the fact that you're flying at mach 4, I guess it could be a good idea to build the plane.

BA and AF were not able to fill the 100 seats of Concorde once a day. And now they want to build a supersonic with 300 seats, which will probably be even more expensive at Mach 4 ????

Terenia - I agree with what you say. The Concorde was a big "white elephant" (I don't know how familiar you all are with English slang terms - it means that there was alot of cost but all for nothing, in a manner of speaking!!) It never recouped the cost of its development, never made a massive profit for BA, it cost alot to operate and as you said, only had capacity for 100. It was never going to work.

But on the other hand, a supersonic aircraft with less fuel emissions, and a greater passenger capacity (maybe that way the cost of operating and therefore ticketing would be comparatively less?) may work a little better. It would need alot of market research before it could get off the ground, and some firm orders, but as I said, that is the only information I have available. I don't know what stage negotiations are at yet (my Mum found the report in the Financial pages of the "Sunday Express" and showed it to me and those were the only details available).

Oh my god, there comes europe again, well they are a little late since the US and Russia are both busy already with the development of an airplane which will replace and make you forget the Concorde.

Many people conveniently forget that the first supersonic passenger aircraft to fly was Russian - the Tu-144! It made its maiden flight before the Concorde, and it was a pity that it never really made it.
