I totally agree with euroflyer.
Who would want to land without reverse thrust on a 1900m-long, wet runway with no margin at the end at all ???
Plus, using only one engine reverse thrust would make the plane skid on a wet runway, right ?
This 10-day rule can be understood on long runways but not on such a short runway (on it + at the end of it).
Poor, poor innocent dead people...

Very often pilots do not get the choice between flying safe or keeping their job...it's sad but true
Dead people are not to blame for the actions they undertook, but the final report will probably state:
Human error:Tried to take-off again, against common operating procedures (runway legnth blablabla)+the captain signed that shit of paper declaring that he takes full responsability of the aircraft under known mechanical and physical circumstances...
Airport will be blamed partially but authorities will say that it was the PIC's call.
In aviation, the risks are big but there's no room for error...

I hope the authorities are independent enough from TAM to come to the proper conclusions.
as how it looks right now, TAM should never have scheduled this particular Airbus on this tight airport, in consideration of the technical failure. Even though the airplane was supposed to be safe "enough" under regular circumstances (as how it appears right now) at this point, the airport was limited in oferring escape points (precautionary thinking when flying with a partially defective plane)
I wonder how many people in TAM logistics will feel some form of guilt, as they are the ones knowing with what kind of hardware they facilitate their flight staff.

Yeah but I think that finally the captain has the full authority and responsability of the airplane ha agrees to operate.
They will blame the dead to spare those alive, like usually.
Seen the recent incident in Columbia with an Embraer-190 skidding off the runway (same day as the TAM A320?) and coming to an halt on the shores (no deaths, a few injuries),...one comes to reconsider aviation safety in South America...

It looks like this situation gets worse all the time.
Brazil Government:
1. Runway too short for the aircraft type (larger jets)
2. Not overrun area
3. Lots of buildings at the end
4. Lack of oversight to ensure not ops with broken equipment (thrust reverser)
5. Compounded by ok to work with one bad for 10 days (again, why 10 days, its either fine forever or its not, sheese).
6. Flying into this airport with an aircraft that cannot have a failure and survive (spoilers failing).
TAMS:
1. Flying into that runway
2. Pilots training as it now appears one engine was still in some thrust mode.
All the mistakes coming together is what good policy and regulations should keep from occurring.
And now the governement can feel better because they can blame the whole thing on TAMS and its pilot (yea he is in command, but yea if he refused the flight, they would fire him and keep doing that until someone did it anyway).

This video shows how fast an aborted landing happens... assuming that you didn t select automatic spoiler deployment at touch-down...
