Brussels airport: monthly figures 2007

Hopefully the increase will be even stronger this summer with new low-cost and long-haul operators coming.
That's why I also gave the new routes in a particular month so that you can see why there is an increase on some routes.
I expect also an increase, a bigger increase, next month when 5 new airlines start flying to BRU. Two of them will have a minimal impact because they are starting their routes by the end of the month: Easyjet and Albanian Airlines. The three others are US Airways, Northwest and KD Avia.
I can give those figures in two months.
I don't know for sure but wasn't it between 16.000 and 20.000 pax?DannyVDB wrote:Does anyone have an idea of the impact of the one dau closure of the airport due to the strike: -15.000 people or more?

I had a forecast of 1.510.000 pax before there was a strike. So it could be when I saw the Macquarie figures of 1.492.000.

It is not because 15000 people were affected that the April or May numbers are 15000 less than what they would otherwise have been.Atlantis wrote:I don't know for sure but wasn't it between 16.000 and 20.000 pax?DannyVDB wrote:Does anyone have an idea of the impact of the one dau closure of the airport due to the strike: -15.000 people or more?

1) Those 15000 people most likely had to be somewhere so they just flew the next day.
2) Other passengers who still have or had to book their flight choose to fly from different airports, or not too fly at all.
In other words it is impossible to say right now what the impact was of this strike, but I guess we can all agree that it certainly didn't help the "ïmage of Brussels Airport".
Why Brussels airport does not have more passengers
- Brussels airlines : I believe some people at BA does really want to expand international routes but that some investors ( banks) are over conservative and only looking to the return of their actual investments and dont want to invest one cent more . Other airlines dont want to invest one cent in BA due to the banks , willing to sell their shares too expensive and no added value onto the airline .
- The Belgian economy does not realise yet an international airline as an elementary need for Belgium ( north and south) .
- The Belgian tourism has never done any effort to attract tourist directly in Belgium and are not thinking to do it . One of the reasons is the federal attitude of tourism in Belgium .
- As all the foreign airlines does know Belgians does have to use one of the big four airports (ams, cdg, fra, lhr) to fly international they will not do any effort to come to BRU .
- Politics are not interested in the airline business even Mr Verhofstadt , by the way he was at the introduction of Jetairways as uninterested as it could be .
-People does accept too easily there is no other choice than to fly thru an other airport .
A small summary of some (historical) reasons why BRU and BA does have it so hard .
Only one big concern to change the things :
DO PEOPLE , POLITICIANS , COMPANIES .... etc BELIEVE WE NEED A STRONG AIRPORT WITH CONCERNED AIRLINES AND WE WILL HAVE SUCCESS . SUPPORT THOSE WHO ARE DOING AN EFFORT as a CARGO B , as A JETAIRWAYS as A BRU Airlines .... Make A positive discrimination .

Re: Why Brussels airport does not have more passengers
You have to go back to 2002 to understand why the banks participated: no bank could ignore the request by Lippens, Davignon and the Royal Palace. I don't like the word "over conservative": banks are money factories, and no social service. That they don't want to invest more at this moment is quite obvious: the return is far too poor for banking standards, and the most expensive staff on the pay roll give the impression that any improvement in results is for them, and not for the shareholders. Are you then wondering why they don't want to invest more??carlcat wrote:- Brussels airlines : I believe some people at BA really want to expand international routes but that some investors (banks) are over conservative and only looking to the return of their actual investments and dont want to invest one cent more.
Disagree: an international airline is no elementary need for Belgium. The economy needs easily accessable international links closeby, and they are lots of them: BRU, CRL, ANR, AMS, CDG, FRA/DUS/MUC, LHR/LGW/LCY. And for the most important route, to/from the U.S., there are lots of possibilities.carlcat wrote: The Belgian economy does not realise yet an international airline as an elementary need for Belgium ( north and south).
Tourism is not a federal, but a regional matter in Belgium. I can assure you: the Flemish minister of Tourism and his tourism office Toerisme Vlaanderen are working very hard to attract (overseas) tourists: www.visitflanders.becarlcat wrote:The Belgian tourism has never done any effort to attract tourist directly in Belgium and are not thinking to do it. I don't know what the other regional tourism services are doing, but www.meetingpointbelgium.be seems to prove that they are also doing well.
I'm not a fan from mr Vrhfstdt, but we have to admit that he was as usual during the Jet Airways. Giving a speach like nobody else can, laughing with his own jokes, looking around for cameras, ... I saw an interview with him on Kanaal Z (business TV): I would not call that "uninterested".carlcat wrote:Politics are not interested in the airline business: even Mr Verhofstadt, by the way he was at the introduction of Jetairways as uninterested as it could be.
Positive discrimination means that others are negatively discriminated, so I don't like it. But actually, BRU is doing rather good, and it's main problems are an image problem (after the catastrophic strike) and a juridical problem (because the federal minister of Transport is unable to take whatever decision in the noise file).carlcat wrote:Only one big concern to change the things : do people, politicians, companies ... believe we need a strong airport with concerned airlines and we will have success. Support those who are doing an effort as Cargo-B, as Jet Airways, as Brussels Airlines. Make a positive discrimination.
Let's face it, gentlemen, BRU is a second order airport if you compare it with LHR/AMS/FRA/CDG and will stay like this for years to come.
Its chance to play a major role in Europe went dow the drain the day Sabena stopped.
The main airline (BruAir) has no financial strenght to grow and is just surviving on a daily basis.
You can fly today anywhere in the world without even thinking about BRU.
Stikes at BRU can pop-up anytimes, without warning, (as it was many times the case at Sabena too).
I remember some pictures of protest against DHL. (NO to DHL - DHL go away). Typicaly
belgian...chasing away a company that was giving job to thousands of people.
Now DHL will leave BRU for Germany.

Why to avoid talking about weakness of BRU Airport and SN ??
The weak figures of pasenger growth ARE the topic.
Why do you put your head in the sand like ostriches ??
JOVAN
Oh shut upWhy do you put your head in the sand like ostriches ??
Why is it we only see the username 'JOVAN' whenever there can be bitching about Belgian aviation? Where were you when all the new flights were announced? In most cases: nowhere to be seen. One exception: in the 9W thread you were bitching about how the Belgians would probably screw up with transit visas. Typical. I don't know about others, but I've pretty much had it with your incessant whining.
This thread is about the numbers, and little else. A thread we can consult regularly to see the latest numbers for the airport, without having to wade through x pages of dribble. Let's keep it that way. For sport bitching, start your own thread.

Well said Teach, I think you have the full support of this team.teach wrote:Oh shut upWhy do you put your head in the sand like ostriches ??![]()

I'm saying this to everyone. I started this topic two years ago to give only the figures and relevant info about our airport. I know that a lot of members appreciate it to have those figures. I will keep it that way.
If you will give some reactions, I think there are a lot of topics where you can do your thing in a CONSTRUCTIVE way and not always give negative "info". Think about it.

Jovan, no offence but when I see your comments as a so-called 'frequent flyer', I'm starting to wonder whether you don't have a different agenda on this website.
When I read your comments, I get the impression that I'm always leaving from a different 'Brussels Airport' than you are.
It is always a pleasure to arrive at/leave from Brussels Airport, and I personally rank it in the top 3 of best airports I've been to already (including ZRH/AMS/FRA/LHR/MAD/MUC/..., airports that are really superior according to you).
I also don't have a problem with the weakness of Brussels Airlines you describe. They always get me where I want to go to, almost always on-time, and usually including a free smile.
You may have your opinion of course, but as a frequent user of this airport (and its home carrier), my experiences absolutely don't mirror yours.

Like the SN loadfactor topic, I thought it could be interesting to start an overview, which we can use to add extra figures once they're available.
BRU pax numbers 2007:
- January 1 039 000 +2.3%
- February 1 064 000 +2.3%
- March 1 335 000 +6.1%
- April 1 492 000 +1.5%
BRU movements 2007:
- January 19426 +3.09%
- February 18849 +0.46%
- March 21817 +0.28%
- April 21101 +2.93%
It seems that lately we don't see cargo figures anymore. Is there anyone who is willing to share this information
