SFA 2007
Hi all,
Since I started my selection tests at the Sabena Flight Academy this year, I would like to know who else wants to start the ATPL training in at the academy.
Therefor I made up a topic where everyone, interested in the training, can meet and talk about their test progress and further plans.
I've already done three parts of the selection tests, the COMPASS test, the physics test and written English test. Except for the last one, I passed with positive results. Next step is the medical check in Brussels, which I will do 23 february. The final part, all the psychological tests, will be done in April, together with the other candidates.
Feel free to add your experiences and hopefully one day we will meet at SFA!
Good luck to you all!
Regards,
Alexander

I'm very interested
my dream is to also start at SFA in a couple of years so I'm REALLY VERY interested in the tests and how the procedure is etc. So you can always tell about it
My first question (stupid), can you prepare yourself for the tests? I mean do you have to study some things that you know they will ask?
Thanks

Hi all,
Glad to hear a lot of enthousiasm here 8)
Well, you actually have to prepare for the tests, unless you're very self confident. For the English test, a little bit of preparation is needed, like the basic grammar things you've seen in Secundary school.
For the physics tests you can use your secundary education's course books, or take the SFA offer: "F.J. Bueche, Shaum’s outline series: ‘Theory and problems of college physics’
This is an excellent book if you forgot most of the basic Physics!
More info about the subjects you have to know: http://www.sfa.be/downloads/new/Integra ... 20info.pdf
Then we come to the parts which you can't really prepare...
The Compass test is a test on the computer for your coördination skills. Maybe you can train a bit your brain by doing a lot of mathematical calculations, without a calculator of course. Try to find coördination tests on the internet or do the IPAS test on the EPST site: www.epst.nl
That will do fine.
@ Venus: It's not that difficult, if you're prepared. I would advise you to find the book I mentioned, study the subjects SFA says you have to know, make the exercises in the book and you'll do very good!
For the other tests, just be yourself, as many people say!
Good luck to you all! Hope to see you at SFA soon...

Hi Venus,
It will help you very much with certain parts of the compass test, I'm sure of that!
One of the tests during the Compass is called 'controls', in which you have to use pedals and a joystick. You have to hold some needles in a certain position on your screen, one with the pedals, another one with your joystick. Since you already have flying experience, this normally won't be a problem for you. I didn't do well on that part, because I never used pedals before. I fly many years on the flight simulator, but I only use a joystick, so it was a bit of 'adapting' to the pedal work...
Anyway, prior to every test on the computer you can train a bit with some trial exercises.
I would advise you to do the IPAS test of EPST => http://www.epst.nl/com/ipas.htm
Somehow you can compare this with the real compass test.

Hi folks
I went to the info session yesterday and afterwards I was 100% sure: I have to try this -at least-, otherwise I will be complaining about it till I'm a dead man. So I will do the test (Part I & II) in april. I'm gonna take 2 weeks holidays at work to study/refresh my knowledge of physics :p
good luck to all the other candidates !

Hi alexander
, I hope that everybody will get his/her results of the medical tests soon, but I don't think that is going to be a problem 8)
And to Venus, I was the boy sitting on the right side of Bert Selis during the information day at SFA on 21/02. I'm going to take part at the selection tests in April too, I've already been studying for Physics, altough I haven't recieved the book of F. J. Bueche yet.
by the way, flying expierience can be an advantage, but on the simulator you should preform a IFR flight and I don't think that any of the candidates already have IFR expierience.(except on Flight Simulator of course)
I wish you all the luck and hopefully we may all start in September

Hello
I agree with JAFflyer and I also want to wish you all a lot of succes!!!
My myself am going the total other way of aviaton...the technical side
although it's not SO expensive (but yet quite some money) it's just like a pilot training a long proces of learning
Hopefully I can start my higher education at the KHBO next Oktober and who know we once meet from pilot to technician
Maybe I see some of you ever flying in the OO-SFI the new plane of the SFA at EBAW (Diamond 'Twinstar'
)
Best regards: Yannick

There is nothing about IFR during the sim check. The only think that is asked is to be able to maintain a certain altitude and heading. Then, you'll be asked to make turns and/or climb/descend at constant rate. They also will ask you some very easy questions (basic mental calculations).
During the briefing everything will be very well explained. The only advice i can give you: the priority is the artificial horizon (fly body attitude 0° to descend, 2 or maybe 3° to fly level and 5° to climb - numbers to be checked, i'm not so sure anymore) and the VSI is only there to cross-check. Last tip: only do very small corrections, be RELAX and ENJOY

Good luck guys!
For the next two weeks, starting from the second of April, there will be a lot of candidates at the SFA building. The second part of the selection procedures starts in April, although some (or many) people still have to do the first part, which will start friday 30 March.
I hope the best for all of you! I'm really looking forward to do these tests...hoping for some good results.
If anyone has tips about how to behave, about the tests or the clothing, please feel free to inform us, candidates...Thanks a lot!

I went to the physics and English selection test on April 28, and there were only 5 candidates. (3 Dutch speaking people and 2 French speakers.)Omikros wrote:For the next two weeks, starting from the second of April, there will be a lot of candidates at the SFA building. I have no idea about the number of people that will be presented at the second part of the selection, but I don’t think that there will be many candidates, because most of the candidates will do their selection in July and August.
Finally, I wish everybody good luck with the selection, and If you really want, you will get there!
